Movie: "They Live"

Unread postby SinisterBlueCat » Wed 19 Oct 2005, 16:47:28

Anyone remember this older John Carpenter movie about the unemployed worker finding that the ruling elite of the world are actually aliens in disguise, their aim being to keep humans in a state of mindless consumerism.

His discovery comes when he puts on a pair of special sunglasses made by a resistance group and sees for the first time true reality. Billboards, store signs, magazine covers--all bear subliminal messages to OBEY, to CONSUME, to have NO INDEPENDENT THOUGHT. Money itself says THIS IS YOUR GOD. But worst of all, with these glasses you see which of us are really hideous, bug-eyed aliens.

I always loved this movie, even though it can be very, very cheesy at times...the alley fight scene is indeed unending, but I love its message, a message that is extremely relevant today. anyone else?

Sure do. For what it was I thought it was a great flick. I enjoy B movies. The wrestler from when I was a kid was in it. Rowdy Piper.

Yes you are totally right, I loved that movie too, it is one of the very few which dare to criticise the fundamentals of our society - no wonder it was cheesy, it probably didn't get a very high budget...

I always thought those bug-eyed aliens were zombified humans.
Anyways, that movie was pretty eerie and cool.
I remember that part where he was staring at that rich couple getting into their Benz.
"What is your problem?", just the way the rich-boy says it as the hero is trying to get a grasp on just what he's looking at through the glasses.

I remember reading the original short story. Can't remember the title, though. I'm pretty sure it was different.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('bentstrider', 'I') always thought those bug-eyed aliens were zombified humans.

yeah, I guess you are right. they were zombified by aliens trying to convert our atmoshpere to theirs.

my favorite line, outside of the bubblegum one of course, is when nada is in the grocery store, and he is freaking out. someone asks him what is wrong, and he points at a women who is normal and says, "you! you are alright," then he points at another lady who is bad, and says, "but you! Formaldehyde face!"

very low budget, but such a great movie. I wish they made movies like that still. now they are all eye candy and no substance. :x

My favorate line in movie-Rowdy Roddy Piper walks in the bank with a shotgun and a uzi and shouts:

"I come her to kick ass and chew bubble gum, and I am all out of bubble gum"

Right up Specops alley..

Yeah, great movie. John Carpenter is the bomb. I recently watched Escape From NY and Assault on Precinct 13 and they were just as good as I remembered them.

Anything by Carpenter is good. What I love best about him is the music and scores he chooses. Who could forget the theme to Halloween or the ear splitting riffs by Anthrax for Ghosts of Mars. If I am not mistaken the harmonica/guitar score for They Live was the same score used on Escape from LA.

Carpenter scores many of the movies himself. I'm fairly certain that They Live was his, as was Halloween.
