My law firm has went bust

Unread postby linlithgowoil » Mon 17 Oct 2005, 09:29:00

Well, looks like October is the time for bad news eh? We all got told this morning that our law firm will cease to exist as of 14th november. my department will be transferred to another law firm, but most of the other staff will be fired as at that time.

I'm sorry to hear it. Is this due to general economic slowing, or is there some other cause?

well, they did say that 'market conditions' were tough, so i suppose it could be to do with rising costs and the economy in general. the law firm i work with do have a lot of good clients and it is profitable, but i think the partners all just decided to go their separate ways because profits arent as high as they want.

im really not looking forward to moving though - i hear the firm we are joining are a right bunch of bastards - you know, the type who work 80 hours a week and never see their families.

Never take such rumors too seriously, it is in the nature of storytellers to make such stories more dramatic.
Kindergarden, school, army, work, everybody will tell you stories beforehand how horrible it will be and that they know someone who experienced this and that...

I bet your new colleagues have heard the same story about you! :-D

Is that actually "bust" or just closed down as you said partners decided to go separate ways.

Is that not "made redundant" rather than fired?

I thought you could only be fired from a going concern.

Hiaks, that's bad. Since when do law firms do bust?

All the best, hopefully the new place isn't quite as bad as they say.

well, yes, technically lots of people were made redundant not fired. the firm just wasnt profitable anymore and if they had continued then the liquidators would likely have been called in, so they decided to wind up and go their separate ways before that happened.

i feel really sorry for some of the guys here though, we have an old guy in the mail room who is 60yrs old and has been here for 20 years and he was saying to me how depressed he was now because he won't be able to get a job. its really sad, plus ill miss a lot of the people here (but not others...!).
