Well, I gotta agree with the votes and their reasoning. It looks like someone who was not familiar with WikiPedia put it up there in a hurry.

It's an <i>encylcopedia,</i> folks -- not free advertising space for other websites!

On another note related to the thread topic, the PeakOil wiki is an unmitigated disaster. It is clogged with spam, there is very little serious work done on it, it is not administered, and my offers to administer and enhance it have not met with much enthusiasm. I say kill it as well, since most people here seem to prefer starting yet another "Preparing for the future" thread of chronological blather, rather than building up something topical.

Sorry for all the negativism. I've moved past talking about this stuff, and am deep into actual preparation these days.

On a positive note: perhaps I'll see some of you in Yellow Springs next week? I'm also addressing a Unitarian "emmigration/intentional community study group" in Kansas City, and talking to a high school in New Jersey -- in addition to monthly ecovillage planning meetings near Victoria, BC.

If anyone is along the route: Portland OR, Kansas City MO, Dayton OH, Trenton NJ, Manchester VT, Toledo OH, Portland, and would like to visit, let me know! (Especially if you have any good sources of waste vegoil... :-)

Can't say that I disagree.

Point taken.

Action not commencing soon will be action run through an obstacle course with a lot of invisible brick walls.

If the sentiment changes, a core group of highly abled people come together, and facility exists, are you willing to give us some direction?

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('EnviroEngr', 'I')f the sentiment changes, a core group of highly abled people come together, and facility exists, are you willing to give us some direction?
Sure! But this very discussion illustrates my point: I put lots of suggestions and ways to deal with things in one or another threads already. Would I be rude to suggest doing a search here first?

Also my time is very dear these days. I can't really do much until December or so, since I'm so booked up with travel.

(In fact, I shouldn't be here now -- procrastinating my list of a couple dozen things to do before leaving on Monday... Don't expect timely responses after then!)

Unread postby Ayoob » Tue 04 Oct 2005, 03:07:05

Refresh if you don't see anything. Please, feedback and changes! Dig in and get busy! There's almost nothing on Savinar, we need embarrassing baby pictures and whatnot!

Link

Link added but not working-jato

ETA:

Link now goes to the Who's Who section of the PO wiki

You may have to refresh your screen a couple times to get in... script config issues... You may have to hit F5 five times or MORE to get into the wiki

Pretty impressive article.

Have you considered submitting it as a possible Featured Article (on the front page of Wikipedia for a day)?

Should be no red links etc. for that, but it's close to being a candidate. Should be peer-reviewed first to maximize chances.

Very important and topical subject, of course.

Nah. I straight-up pirated the vast majority of that stuff from Wikipedia, which is fine with them. That is really just a beginning of that section, anyway. Next, I want to chop that section off into pages of its own, start adding pictures and more info on each person, link to their important papers or business interests as the case may be, and just keep adding one brick at a time.

Either I am confused or you are! That link and the previous one given are the official Wikipedia site. The PO Wiki is a different wiki! Maybe specop had a good point after all. 8O

Building up the Wiki

Unread postby Ayoob » Wed 05 Oct 2005, 01:48:49

I have no idea what I'm doing over there. Does anybody else know how to add pages and move $hit around and generally try to organize shit over there? If you do, even if you don't want to clock hours putting stuff in place, I'd really appreciate a hand in getting things organized and whatnot. I'm flying blind and probably f@#king things up but whatever, I have a little time and energy to put into this so I'm just rolling up on this m@#herf@#ker and seeing what I can get done an hour here and an hour there.

Somebody else throw down and help me get this done.

http://www.peakoil.com/wiki/index.php/Main_Page

It's real easy. Simply login to the site, then click the edit page button. This allows you to edit any page that you wish to.

You create links to other pages on the wiki by adding the pages you want inside double brackets such as [[M. Hubbert King]]

A general list of tags you can use is at
http://www.peakoil.com/wiki/index.php/Help:Editing

You can get more help on how to use Wiki at. (it is linked on every edit page)
http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Help:Help

Please help add content, I kept up the content for a long time but I lost interest as most people seem to enjoy forum whining over content creation. *grin*

Each page has a "discussion" tab so if you want to make comments about the page in general, put them there. If we all worked on it for a few min a week we would have the most solid repository of oil depletion knowledge within a few months.

Hope to see you there!

PO Wiki Ruined

Unread postby Aaron » Mon 17 Oct 2005, 09:18:56

Well, well, well,

Our wiki was compromised... & all your good work to help educate your fellow man is gone.

Hours & hours of time donated by PO.com members gone to make way for some scumbag's spam.

Ever heard the saying about one bad apple?

Yes sir... it's gonna be a bright future of cooperation and group hugs as we slide down Hubbert's peak.

I actually think we should leave the wiki as is. It's a better object-lesson.

Ironic that it's a pain-killer advert hack.

I suspect we are gonna need em.

So let's all get back to work building our Urban Planned, Micro Farm, Eco-Friendly, Bio-Fueled, Composting, sustainable future...

It's gonna be a bright, bright, sun shiny day...

XOXOXOXOXOXOXO

Yes - I find it amazing that in our present society, with all the abundance we enjoy, we fight. I can turn on the evening news, and there are stories of how we kill over a word, a gesture, or an imagined slight.

And people suppose that we'll suddenly unite in a chorus of kumbaya as we cooperate - during a time of shortages, hunger, and privation?

If only I could write such fiction! I would become wealthier than the dreams of avarice.

change it back?

I recon it should be cached somewhere. I personally don't understand how wikipedia works. They should only allow changes to registered users, implement a versioning system and at the least allow for disputed subjects to have some way of analysing the disputes, whats commonly accepted, whats not, etc.
Assuming its not controlled, influenced it will end up being hacked by anyone who disagrees over time.

I've noticed many articles which factually are correct but draw a single conclusion that is disputable, its deeply flawed
