Here in Canada, peak oil is barely on the radar yet. So perhaps what you are saying is pretty US-centric. Here, people are still looking at the short-term price gouging attempts done by the local refiners as opposed to looking at the long-term consumption problems.

The newspapers I read (Swedish and German) often write about this issue as if their goal was to avoid worries. High oil and gas prices are always "temporary" and a result of "bad luck" and everything will be just fine soon.

Not even the scandal sheets are interested. They write hysterical doomsday stories about avian flu, how you get cancer from everything and global warming but not a single word about the possible effects of oil depletion.

Today I saw something very interesting on CNN. They had a Proffesor from Yale on talking about how our (US) suburban lifestyles is a major cause of our energy problems.

It was like watching "The End of Suburbia." She spoke about how we needed to return to more localized communities. Work and food being located closer to homes etc... The segment was relatively long (a few minutes).

Its a start, and the first I've seen on one of the major mass media outlets discussing this issue. The majority of the news is still about anything but energy though

It's more than just buy, buy, buy. It's also "hate the Arabs, love Israel", and "put your money into Wall Street", and "We can put anybody in jail, even sweet Martha Stewart", and a bombardment of other manipulations that few realize even exist. I read, or at least scan over, the Boston Herald every day, one of the most ridiculous right-wing tabloid rags in the country. I want to know what is being presented to the borderline literate.
But I seldom watch Foxnews. Hey, I can only take so much...

there's always a hidden side to the media. i observe the newsreaders a lot, watch their expressions, emotions and adlibs
I'm always hearing things like 'thats like an omen', 'there's hope for us all', etc. I'm convinced behind the scenes they know somethings going on but in a conservative environment that doesn't join the dots.. its not a suprise. There's room for some being human in the west that refreshing

oh.. and I often watch bloomberg, got a thing for that Erin. When the market's crash so long as she's telling me I don't care. She is so professional, so the other day I flicked over, she was laughing away. I was suprised, then realised it was a story about POT growing! cool

Given that most of the mainstream media is controlled by corporations who have a vested interest in not acknowledging PO and its consequences, we shouldn't be surprised at their callow approach to the subject.
