$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('jaws', 'A') lot of stores have a policy that says 'if the labelled price is lower than the price at check-out, you get the lower price plus 10% off'. Is it dishonest for someone to take advantage of that policy? It results from a mistake by the store.

If you strongly suspect someone made a mistake (like in this case), then you could just make them aware of it, instead of taking advantage of it. Why should we try to help eachother when we can take advantage of eachother

This is also why we need all these rules, if the law doesn't specifically mention that you are not allowed to do a certain thing, then we will take advantage of it even though we know one should not do it. And we all pay the price for that behaviour. If you know a subsidy was not intended for your particular situation, should you collect it just because according to the rule you can?

We waste a lot of time and energy on trying to take advantage of everything, and thus need even more time to close all the loopholes which makes it highly complex and inefficient. We work so hard to destroy the system in place while in the illusion that we are actually taking advantage of it. We get very angry when we hear that someone is taking advantage of our taxmoney, but we have no problem taking advantage ourselves. One could only imagine what we could achieve if we would try to help eachother and work together.

Funny thing, ask people which society they prefer: one where everyone is out to take advantage of you as soon as the opportunity arises, or one in which everyone will help you out when needed. If most people want the latter society, why are they trying so hard to create the first?

If things ever get out of hand down there, i plan to barricade my driveway and clean the place out with pepper spray.

Now that makes me wish i was an American

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Jack', '')$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('jdmartin', 'I')t is dishonest and unethical, any way you look at it.

A friend of mine has a saying: "The unethical we do immediately. The illegal takes a little longer."

He is presently enjoying a comfortable retirement...from a job in Federal law enforcement... 8)

Right, law enforcement officials do unethical things all the time, such as telling a suspect that their accomplice confessed, that they have hard evidence that the suspect committed a crime- a tape, etc... when they have nothing of the sort. How about some sheriff pretending to be a 13yr. girl and going into chat rooms,etc..., trying to get some dumb pervert to meet them for sex? In general, the country apparently approves of unethical behavior to get desired results?

That's perfectly legal - it is not, as some would have you believe, entrapment. Rather, it is making the opportunity to commit a crime available. It has been tested by the courts, and is absolutely legal and constitutional.

Ahh, but what is ethics? And what is ethical behavior? Who is the arbiter of such determinations? But I digress - that would best be dealt with in another thread.

I never said it wasn't legal, but it is probably unethical. How can it be ethical to lie?

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('ALBY', 'T')he gas station in question is across a rural 2 lane 'feeder' route from my driveway, which is 200 years long or so.

I immediately ordered a dozen 6 oz fox labs pepper spray grenades. i will not tolerate civil disorder at the end of my driveway !

You think those pepper grenades will still work in 2205 when they get down your driveway?

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('jdmartin', 'O')f course, what I now find more disturbing than the original bunch of thieves are the fact that more than one person on this board has attempted to justify an obvious case of dishonesty & lack of integrity, even if it wasn't outright illegal.

Of course, I think you must have been born yesterday, mate.

One must decide whether the lie serves the accomplishment of a higher purpose.

Or, if you prefer, one must decide whether the end justifies the means.

From that, much follows.

Honestly it saddens me to say this, but I am not so certain I also would have not taken advantage of it. I would like to think myself a better person than that, but I am really tired of spending half my paycheck on gas :( Who knows, lord knows I have spoken up and done the right before even though everybody hated me for it afterwards.

Please remind how the game of capitalism is played? I was under the impression people tended to buy the cheaper option.

If you have two garages, one sells petrol for $32 a gallon, and another for $3.20 a gallon you would go to the second.

Similarly if you have two with prices like $3.20 and $.32 people would tend to the latter.

No magic, no big deal, no dishonesty.

I don't not know that customers were now supposed to care about the vendors profit margins, such concern is indeed commendable but surprisingly rare.

Grocery store errors are rarely a decimal place large. You buy a bunch of groceries including a box of cookies that's normally $3.99, they ring it up for $2.99, maybe the cookies were on sale or who-knows-what, but you weren't planning it and you didn't notice it going through the register, so it's not theft, it's a mistake.

The moral obligation, when you notice something and it's big enough to be questionable, is to question it. "Hey Bob, is that right? Thirty two cents a gallon?"

A week or two ago I saw someone drop a hundred-dollar-bill on the ground. "Excuse me, you dropped some money..." Automatic reflex; doesn't even occur to me to try to swipe it.

Money is a tool, it's worth what you build with it.

What's really sad and pathetic is that for 30-45 minutes the gophers running the store noticed nothing unusual about customers putting a couple bucks or more of gas in there tank

Reminds me of the public at large not really noticing a lot of things happening in the world today

come one now, get off your high horse some of you. if i was presented with extra cash out of an ATM i'd take it and try and get more. why? because banks are thieves. my bank charges me £35 if i go 1 pence over my overdraft limit. they charge me 17% interest on my overdraft, but only give me 4% interest on my positive balances.

stick it to the banks and the large corporations - stick it to them!!!! i think the oil companies should be forced to sell petrol at a loss - a very large loss.

Many stations have a system that allows purchases by credit or debit card without consulting an attendent.

What's pathetic is that the lady who is the manager made the mistake and the job is not difficult to do. The fact is she is a retard if she set the price and didn't double check it. This is not like forgetting to comb your hair, this is her livelihood. If she lived downtown and went to a movie with all her doors unlocked what would you think of her?

I can imagine living next to you post- peak oil or just after a normal black out?

"Hey, I know where his garage door key is. I am pretty sure he has a generator in there and maybe a few extra gallons of petrol? Bastard. Did you know he works in a bank? Deserves everything he gets right? Mr. High & Mighty. Huh, now he can shiver in the dark with the rest of us. Serves him right, it does."

Some people can always rationalize their behavior instead of doing the right thing.
The organized state is a wonderful invention whereby everyone can live at someone else's expense.
