Gas station mistake - cheap gas

How sad to see people have become so dishonest that, knowing it had to be a screw-up, they still couldn't wait to run out and fill up their cars. I wonder if these same people would be running around grabbing the money that fell out of someone's purse, or is it OK because it's only a greedy convenience store? I only hope they don't make the manager pay the thousands of dollars the station likely lost, back, or fire her for the mistake.

The most pathetic is the guy that said "it made his day". It is really disturbing to me to know there are that many dishonest people out there.
After fueling up their cars, Twyman says they bowed their heads and asked God for cheaper gas. There was no immediate answer, but he says other motorists joined in and the service station owner didn't run them off.

Yep, probably God fearing Americans who teach their children not to steal, too?

I was at the beach the other day and a wad of cash fell out of my bathing suit pocket when I got up from the table to pay for my lunch. A girl ran up behind me and gave me the money back otherwise I would have been outta luck. So there you go, it is not yet hopeless? Mind you that wasn't in America either? :)

You're surprised?

These people probably justified it to themselves (and countless others) by proclaiming that they 'scored' one for the 'rest of us'. Presumably, this means that they've successfully won a battle against those greedy, evil oil companies  , oblivious to the fact that they've actually screwed over one of their own - all because of an honest mistake.

Those idiots stupid enough to give their real name and the amount of gas they drove off with should get their asses kicked. They'll get theirs.

No, not surprised (see original post), but disturbed. I guess it still bothers me seeing such dishonesty, even knowing how many people look to "get over" on something/someone else.

Reminds me of a story I heard on the radio a year or 2 ago. A ATM at a college giving out additional $20s with every $20 fastcash with draw. With in 12 hours the ATM was cleaned out by college students. The kicker was that the ATM camera worked just fine and gave ample evidence of repeat withdraws from the college students.

while this may be dishonest and unethical, it should not be illegal.

the people could make a fair argument that they've been living in a cave for the past 10 years and didn't know that the .32 cents/gal price was actually a mistake.

Nice try. Only works if they're filling up a 10-year old car, though.
I'll bet most of these guys were filling up their sparkling 'employee discount specials'.

And where in the hell was gas .32 cents/gal 10 years ago?
You'd have to go back a lot further than that to find those kinds of bargains.

The difference between these two stories is the sence of entitlement Americans have. Most Americans know they are not entitled to have cash you dropped on the ground. On the other side of the same coin Americans beleive they are entitled to cheap everlasting gas. It is a god given right to most people to consume vast quantities of gas like they were breathing air. It is their right as an American to have 32 cent gas. They reason if it wasn't for greedy foreigners and terrorists everyone would have 32 cent gas and there would be two SUVs in every garage like god intended. That very same girl who gave you your cash would fill her tank and think nothing of it. That is the American way.

Completely unrelated, but sad and pathetic nevertheless:

My 4yo wanted to go to Pizza Hut for lunch, so my wife picked me up and we went. They should call that place the feedlot. For those that don't know, they run a lunch buffet, 5 bucks for all the pizza, including desert pizza, and soda pop you can stomach. My kid likes it because she likes pizza and she likes the play area. I of course like spending time with my wife and kids. But that place just makes me sad for my fellow man.

Sad and pathetic indeed.

This thread reminds me of an experience I had at the exxon on my road right after the big price spike, post katrina.

The gas station in question is across a rural 2 lane 'feeder' route from my driveway, which is 200 years long or so.

Anyway, the price of gas had spike to 3.49 and i thought people were going to lynch the poor acne scarred kid behind the counter. the anger level was off the charts and people did not seem to realize or care that this kid was not the owner, or a representative of exxon or in any way responsible for the price of gas.

That day, i knew, that if trouble ever cam to my area, it would be at the gas station.

I immediately ordered a dozen 6 oz fox labs pepper spray grenades. i will not tolerate civil disorder at the end of my driveway ! If things ever get out of hand down there, i plan to barricade my driveway and clean the place out with pepper spray.

A lot of stores have a policy that says 'if the labelled price is lower than the price at check-out, you get the lower price plus 10% off'. Is it dishonest for someone to take advantage of that policy? It results from a mistake by the store.

I'm surprised at peoples reactions here saying that people were dishonest. Paying the advertised price for anything is standard fare at most stores. Are people dishonest if they go to January, closing down or fire sales?

The point of the policy that you're referring to is to make the store aware of pricing inconsistencies and prompt efforts to correct them, in addition to compensating customers for their efforts in keeping their business running smoothly.

Dare I say the people filling up on 32-cent gasoline were making a concerted effort in concealing the pricing error from the gas station attendants, as plainly noted in the stealthy fueling procedures that were taking place.

So, your comparison is that of apples and oranges. Even if it wasn't illegal, it doesn't make it right.
And, yeah, I realize the gas station attendant made a mistake, albeit a costly one. The blame starts there.

That is not the same thing, and it's fairly obvious that it's not. A "closing down" sale or a "fire sale" is a legitimate, advertised attempt by a business to liquidate the remainder of their merchandise. Further, they were not paying the "advertised price", because the advertised price is generally located on big billboards at the road's edge.

The people who were getting the gas knew that they were stealing that gas because of a screw-up. You could look up in the air and see what the price was supposed to be. You could look at the regular unleaded and see what the price was supposed to be. It is dishonest and unethical, any way you look at it. If there was a chance that people were addle-brained, as someone said earlier, and had no idea how much gasoline costed, then it might be possible to excuse that person. What's obvious about the dishonesty is how the people who got the gas didn't say anything to the clerk (i.e., "boy this 32 cent gasoline sale you've got going is great! I'm gonna tell all my friends"), but instead called up everyone they know to "quick get down here as fast as you can, one of the pumps has 32 cent gas".

Of course, what I now find more disturbing than the original bunch of thieves are the fact that more than one person on this board has attempted to justify an obvious case of dishonesty & lack of integrity, even if it wasn't outright illegal.

Come on, relax a bit. What if, for an example, (this is something I tend to do often) you were to use your gas card. You quickly get the pump going automaticly, and chill in your car while its pumping. When its done quickly put the hose back and take off. I mean shit I might have done that at that gas station and not realised till a month later (if at all) when I saw a $3.00 gas charge.

A lot of people dont pay much attention to things they do all the time, and things they do in a hurry. Your making such a big deal about these people getting cheap gas, yet in the end their use of it will result in their demise. Thats how a lot of people feel here, so why make such a big deal?? It will be the last time they will ever be happy from pumping gas.. im sure

In my neck of the woods, there are numerous truck stops with older, mechanical signs up on huge pylons. Even today, many of these signs were never fitted with anything other than a $1.xx sign, so in lieu of buying new signs, they are displaying their fuel price as $ .xx, instead of the current price, $2.xx. or even $3.xx. To my knowledge, no one has questioned that .xx is not the 'actual' price, but actually refers to whatever the prevailing dollar rate is + the cents listed on the pylon. Drivers need look no further than their own common sense for this. Too bad common sense is out of fashion these days, though.

There was a similar incident in NYC after 9/11 at an entire bank. Some of the computers had been trashed at the WTC. When people used the ATM in the banks, their balances never declined no matter how much money they took out. The ATMs were resupplied normally. This went on for weeks. In the end, they said that hundreds of thousands of dollars were taken wrongly. Everyone who did it was caught, because the computer keeping records was still working...
