$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('oowolf', 'T')he American Dream: A tax on fools hoping for something for nothing. (Not that we invented the soul corrupting concept of the free lunch.) Las Vegas is our true capital; a tawdry trash-pit monument to the lowest common denomination of human gullibility and depravity. A gawky temple of squandered resources and potential that, I fear, epitomizes this "civilization's" fondest delusions. Couldn't we have done better than this?
Really, does anyone think that MONEY will solve ANY of our problems?

Why couldn't the human race ever grow up?

I think we have a winner of the "write like Kunstler" contest.

Maybe I just don't see the point and maybe I am still completly controlled by my penis, but I am going to use the money to sleep with as many women as possible before society collapses and there are no more razors and clean water.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Aaron', '')$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'I')nvesting in "sustainable enterprises" is about raising the chance of collective security, without the delusion of garranteed isolation from threat.

So how about the ammendment

Ok...

It's an exceptionally tall island located in the middle of a vast crater-lake high in the Alps, power by geothermal vents, generates it's own oxygen inside a giant Plexiglas dome. The entire lake is infested with giant Paraná, and is surrounded by wild packs of pit bulls and land mines.

And through the use of alien technology from Area 51 is impervious to all other conditions you can think of...

And the best rock & roll yet written was sung in an American English accent by guys who speak with a British accent...

Aaron -

you illustrate my point rather neatly - Living behind such defences is far from luxurious -
you aren't free to go swimming or walking and you can't even hear the birdsong or feel the breeze carrying the scents of the season -
you're shut in a bubble of fear of external threats.
You'd be living in a grand-scale bunker, as a prisoner of the fear of failure to generate a sustainable society.

Effectively we cannot, in a PO world, buy both real luxury and real security for a mere £500m.

Given that most members will never see one thousanth of that amount,
it seems to me a distraction from the question of the need to build morale to face the global problems,
rather than encouraging people to despair of their amelioration.

It's just a variation on the "What would you do with a million dollars?" exercise BS.

Whatever you answer is supposed to be what your perfect job is.

You contend that it's possible for people to band together & cooperate our way out of our oil dilemma, and I'm using this exercise to demonstrate that even among the informed, there is limited patience for personal sacrific for the larger good.

What do we think this poll would look like in the gen pop?
The problem is, of course, that not only is economics bankrupt, but it has always been nothing more than politics in disguise... economics is a form of brain damage.

Seriously (for the first time in this thread) for many years I dreamed of doing exactly what I am doing now and for many reasons - if not specific, at least parallel to PO.

Don’t discount the power of dreams.

Regarding the overarching topic of rock, I’m particularly fond of the British interpretations of American Blues - Clapton et.al.

Aaron -

What I contend is not that we can "co-operate our way out of our oil dilemma,"
but that we have no remotely palatable choices other than to pull together globally to achieve a relatively orderly transition to a very different society.
-
Given varying degrees of the Savinar Prospect as the alternative,
the probability of our success in so pulling together is practically irrelevant compared to the individual's decision, and their morale, to try.

As members seem to be at least 2/3rds US, with perhaps the heaviest of cultural programming to self interest,
I'm impressed that only about half the votes are for the cushy delusion of personal material security.
Given a poll across the global population with similar info I've no doubt we'll see a still greater proportion voting for the common good.

For me the poll thus demostrates that while many will doggedly follow the illusions of self interest,
there is a potentially massive swathe of support for coherent action towards a very different, globally sustainable, society.

Building both the information base, and the morale, to help establish that movement for change,
seems to me to be the real and present potential of this site.

1) Buy all the oil fields I can
2) Sell the oil at half price to the poorest countries
3) Wait for the US to come bombing me
4) Retire in the luxury island.

After all, many "dictators" already did the same many times...

Invest half in sustainable businesses that will be useful post PO, half into energy research. And get into a few glamorous parties where I can convince a few famous people about PO!

You're a bugger Aaron, but i benefit from reading Backstops responses.

Am surprised nobodies requested as f) the most exciting investment (maybe not so stupid as to say it?), to fund global insurrection deposing muddleheaded me-firsters and/or disabling nonessential consumption supply chains. Jeez, and all those action films..

Why is buying a plot of land away from danger a "delusion" of security?

Such hypocrisy!

Anyway, I picked that option.

I'd buy a few thousand acres near a farming community and split the land up into smaller plots. Then I'd build a castle in the middle. I would offer food, work, and protection to anyone who needed it. A small band of close friends would be my protectors in case the serfs attempted to rise up.

Basically I would become a feudal lord.

Y'all would be welcome to come and work the land for me.

But with permaculture, we could have a very productive farm without a lot of heavy physical labor. I would only require that you give me 25% of your crop. That's a much better deal than most people currently get from their government.

So what do you think?
