Holy Cow!

You just won $500 million in the lottery.

What do you do?
The problem is, of course, that not only is economics bankrupt, but it has always been nothing more than politics in disguise... economics is a form of brain damage.

I don't see these choices as either/or, there could easily be a mix of several, along with educating people and creating PO communities.

Aaron -

in the interests of accuracy, might I prevail upon you to ammend the first option to read

". . . and retire amid the delusion of secure luxury" . . . . ?

Jeeze...

It's like arguing physics with Heisenberg in here sometimes...

If these were the only choices you had... etc... etc...

Man... tough room.

Please note I created more "cooperation" based choices, than I did for the "selfish" choices.

Aaron,

Given that a mere $500M doesn't begin to buy luxurious security from intensifying hurricanes, rising sea-levels, bird flu, carrier battle groups, ICBMs, malarial mosquitos, etc,

the first option is based on a delusion that needs identifying if the poll is to measure real choices.

So how about the proposed ammendment ?

God ok...

You win a special Swiss lottery with no taxes taken, and find a semi-complete "fixer up" island retreat which already has almost everything you need to survive ok?

I expect more imagination from you BS... your countrymen practically invented modern rock for goodness sake.

(Mosquitoes lol) goodness sake.

Aaron, you forgot an 'other' option... :P

Assuming $500m US, after tax:

- Inform Government of intention to build and operate tram line.
- Bribe if necessary to get permission to build.
- Build.
- Operate.

Aaron -

it is precisely my imagination, and practical experience of both tropical and temperate island living, that generated my list of the unavoidable risks facing an island retreat.

Thanks for the (unwarranted) kudos re UK invention of rock btw.

As it stands the poll measures willingness to buy illusions, not personal security.

Investing in "sustainable enterprises" is about raising the chance of collective security, without the delusion of garranteed isolation from threat.

So how about the ammendment ? :)

Just to get started I'd buy off the rights to "End of Suburbia", put it in the public domain, and do an AOL style saturation-bomb mass mailing of the DVD. Then maybe do the same with Savinar's book.

I’ll go for Fantasy Island.

Remember; plan for everything to happen that you can – including Nothing. In which case life would be good!

On the down side of course is that obnoxious little shit yelling in my ear with his obnoxious little voice:

"None of the above"

I'd invest it in an intentional community and in promoting sustainable living, especially permaculture, in my local area.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Aaron', 'H')oly Cow!

You just won $500 million in the lottery.

What do you do?

-Put $50 million each in Chevron, BP, Shell, Conoco, and Apache.
-Put $150 million in Massey Energy
-Put $50 million in utilities heavy in nuclear or renewables, like Idacorp or Exelon.
-Put $50 million in Norfolk Southern.

Not sure if all of these are sustainable businesses, but I'll sure have $20 billion, inflation-adjusted, when P.O. hits. Don't know what I'll do then, but having $20 billion worth of assets will be helpful. Maybe I'll be able to make sure that Illinois or Wisconsin or some other midwestern grain-producing state doesn't fall into Peak Oil chaos along with the rest of the country.

I can't vote because you haven't listed the option I would choose. I would spend the money to found a community in a remote location outside of the US that has good potential for agriculture and abundant forests but few other resources. The goal would not be luxury for myself but a basis for survival for myself and 10-20 others.

There's also a notable absence of any option to invest in the international politics of global sustainability, without which all other options are predictably futile.

Yet as a test of -run & hide in selfish delusions- versus -investing in sustainable enterprises- it does at least give some general indication of voters' morale.

Ok...

It's an exceptionally tall island located in the middle of a vast crater-lake high in the Alps, power by geothermal vents, generates it's own oxygen inside a giant Plexiglas dome. The entire lake is infested with giant Paraná, and is surrounded by wild packs of pit bulls and land mines.

And through the use of alien technology from Area 51 is impervious to all other conditions you can think of...

Wow that island was a better bargain than I thought.

It all makes sense now; Tatto is an alien!

At least I won't have to pedal da plane.

The American Dream: A tax on fools hoping for something for nothing. (Not that we invented the soul corrupting concept of the free lunch.) Las Vegas is our true capital; a tawdry trash-pit monument to the lowest common denomination of human gullibility and depravity. A gawky temple of squandered resources and potential that, I fear, epitomizes this "civilization's" fondest delusions. Couldn't we have done better than this?
Really, does anyone think that MONEY will solve ANY of our problems?

Why couldn't the human race ever grow up?
