Like a racoon

so sad, but so true. It reminds me of the part in the book, Where the Red Fern Grows, where they trap the racoon by putting some shiny object at the bottom of a hole drilled in a log and ringed with nails, so that when the coon grasped the object it became impossible to withdraw his paw from the hole without being caught on the nails unless he dropped the object, which of course it would never do. Even with the hunter approaching and death inevitable, the racoon would not drop the shiny object.

I remember feeling a horrified fascination at the thought of being trapped that way, perfectly able to escape but unwilling to give up the glittering prize.

I'm trapped in a well paid job which I hate. I can't give it up because you simply don't do that.

I hold on to the shiny object because I'm unable to let it go.

Suggestions?

I do not know your circumstances and responsibilities, but I have to ask...why not? You say one simply does not do that, but why if we are unhappy, do we cling so tightly to the chains that bind us? why do we trade in our hours for a handful of dimes?

I am not suggesting I have answers, I am just musing.

I moved out of the city to the country and now commute by rail.

Which is like the racoon growing a really really long arm. So when the hunter comes (job goes) at least my body(house/family) is out of harm's way.
