look for the truth outside yourself

Unread postby EnviroEngr » Mon 23 Aug 2004, 19:14:14

If you look for the truth outside yourself,
it gets farther and farther away.
Today, walking alone,
I meet him everywhere I step.
He is the same as me,
yet I am not him.
Only if you understand it in this way
will you merge with the way things are.

You are not thinking.
You are merely
being logical.

Words cannot express things;
Speech does not convey the
spirit.
Swayed by words, one is lost;
Blocked by phrases, one is
bewildered.

"Throughout human history, as our species has faced the frightening, terrorizing fact that we do not know who we are, or where we are going in this ocean of chaos, it has been the authorities, the political, the religious, the educational authorities who attempted to comfort us by giving us order, rules, regulations, informing, forming in our minds their view of reality. To think for yourself you must question authority and learn how to put yourself in a state of vulnerable, open-mindedness; chaotic, confused, vulnerability to inform yourself." Timothy Leary

LOL! If we're quoting our fearless leader, we can't leave this one out:

"We need an energy bill that encourages consumption."

and

"Natural gas is hemispheric. I like to call it hemispheric in nature because it is a product that we can find in our neighborhoods."

:D :D :D Those are great guys. This thread seems to find new life at just the right intervals.

Here's a few Bertrand Russell quote's that are probably tragi-comic in the context of this site...
- Many people would sooner die than think; In fact, they do so.
- If a man is offered a fact which goes against his instincts, he will scrutinize it closely, and unless the evidence is overwhelming, he will refuse to believe it. If, on the other hand, he is offered something which affords a reason for acting in accordance to his instincts, he will accept it even on the slightest evidence.

and my favourite:
- The whole problem with the world is that fools and fanatics are always so certain of themselves, but wiser people so full of doubts.
- "I was in the unenviable position of being for the war, but, against the troops." B. Hicks.

Here's some quotes written by Albert Einstein.

"Two things are infinite: the universe and human stupidity; and I'm not sure about the the universe."

"Unless Americans come to realize that they are not stronger in the world because they have the bomb but weaker because of their vulnerability to atomic attack, they are not likely to conduct their policy at Lake Success [the United Nations] or in their r elations with Russia in a spirit that furthers the arrival at an understanding."

"Only a life lived for others is a life worth while."

"The search for truth is more precious than its possession."

"We can't solve problems by using the same kind of thinking we used when we created them."

"We act as though comfort and luxury were the chief requirements of life, when all that we need to make us happy is something to be enthusiastic about."

"Problems cannot be solved at the same level of awareness that created them."

"When asked how World War III would be fought, Einstein replied that he didn't know. But he knew how World War IV would be fought: With sticks and stones!"

"Not everything that counts can be counted, and not everything that can be counted counts."

Multiple Personality

Unread postby EnviroEngr » Mon 13 Sep 2004, 22:09:43

We are all many persons.
Some of these people we know
and others we don’t
—only someone else knows them.
Some of these people we like
and some of them we don’t like. . . .
All of this is music;
it is the music of our lives
if we could only stop and listen.
Music doesn’t have any meaning;
you can’t explain it.
Eating a meal doesn’t
have any meaning, either, but
if there’s no eating there’s no life,
and if we don’t hear music
we can’t dance.
This is our practice—to eat our meals
and clean up;
to dance to the music of our lives,
each one in our own way,
and then die when it’s time.

Children of the Sun

Unread postby EnviroEngr » Mon 13 Sep 2004, 22:13:11

People born into this floating world
Quickly become like roadside dust:
At dawn, little children,
By sunset, white-haired and old,
with no inner understanding
They struggle without cease.
I ask the children of the universe,
Why do you bother to pass this way?

R.BF Cosmology

Unread postby EnviroEngr » Mon 13 Sep 2004, 22:19:54

Everything you learned in school as
“obvious” becomes less and less obvious
as you begin to study the universe. For
example, there are no solids in the universe;
not even the suggestion of a solid. There
are no absolute continuums. There are no
surfaces. There are no straight lines.

"I do not propose to write an ode to dejection, but to brag as lustily as chanticleer in the morning, standing on his roost, if only to wake my neighbors up."
