Book: "I am Charlotte Simmons" by Tom Wolfe

Unread postby PenultimateManStanding » Tue 20 Sep 2005, 20:20:14

I Am Charlotte Simmons is the new novel from Tom Wolfe. It's about a virginal genius girl from the mountains of North Carolina who goes to a prestigious college only to find to her dismay that the scene is all about debauchery and not intellect. I started reading this today and find, as usual with Wolfe, that it is a compelling read. The guy can write! The book features a lot of anglo anorexic girls, jocks who only have to point to get laid, nerdy 'tutors' who keep the GPA's of the jocks up for a palty fee, and lots of wry observances on the lingo, attitudes, and so on. College life is a joke, a sham of what it's supposed to be. Intellectual developement is what it's supposed to be about, in theory. Meanwhile, America loses its edge in anything that matters intellectually, as our old friend Lorenzo pointed out.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'I')t's about a virginal genius girl from the mountains of North Carolina who goes to a prestigious college only to find to her dismay that the scene is all about debauchery and not intellect.

Where is this college and how can I get there?

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'T')he teacher has students, primarily Mexican, who though with not an anorexic to seen amongst them, clearly have no interest in math

If they're not that interested in math, they have to be somewhat intelligent. Math sucks.

The moral of that story would seem to be, don't go to college. Wish I had read it a few years ago. I agree, college is a joke, always has been. When or if I ever get my degree, I should use it for toilet paper out of spite. As you can probably tell, I'm bitter. :-D

Seems to me like Charlotte could have saved herself the trouble from the get go. She's a genius, what does she need to go to a diploma mill for anyway? Here's the sequel:

She graduates, finds that she can't get a job in her career field, spends several years flipping burgers, and finally lands herself in a job that has nothing to do with what she was educated for. By the time she has the ghost of a chance at having an appropriate career, her knowledge is outdated, her degree too old and is forced to go back to school. Rinse and repeat.

I had a conversation with a teacher yesterday about the issue of whether math is 'useful'. She was saying that math is neccessary to pass the state tests, period. Otherwise she agreed with her students who didn't want to study math. I countered with what I believe which is that math is a component of an educated person's background. It's how you learn to think. Of course, thinking isn't in high repute anymore as we slide into the new dark age.

College is what you make of it, just like anything else in life. Studying the merits of college education from the viewpoint of frat boys doing keg stands is asinine and serves to create a straw man for those demonizing education in general.

I fear that this book is but another exercise in the continual debasement of academia, and anything remotely related to it. Vilification of science, engineering, medicine, media, public schools are all part of the grand scheme to shove the unquestioning sheeple back into the pews and confines of organized religion and out of the enlightenment of the humanist movement.

Of course, I haven't read the book. :P

The 'college' you want is in Tijuana, B.C. The cook at the restaraunt where I moonlight to make financial ends meet took the male owner and his brother and friends for a bachelor party south of the border to a strip club. Down there you can grope the girls who ask you point blank if you want to fuck, with enthusiasm. They have rooms 'in the back'. The best looking girls with 'chi chis'.

And is kept out of education financial aid etc for being an Evil White Person(tm) all along the way.

I agree, fuck college, it's become a political game and has little to do with learning.

Best thing to prepare for the future is to learn trade-type things and indulge in all the education you want, libraries are free and used books are cheap. Learn how to do a number of things and start and run your own business so you don't have your Democrat employer requiring you to vote his way or get fired. And look out for your own.

That's how it in what jobs would hire whites, yes. And even on the mainland USA, in some rather high-level jobs, it's common for employers to put out "the word" on how they want employees to vote. The wrong bumper sticker on your car can get you fired, there was a case like that recently.

And no, never worked for a micky-d's, that was considered too good a job for a white. I'd no sooner expect to see a white working there in a micky-d's than I'd expect to see a white bus driver. Some things just aren't done.

OH YEAH!

I find that my life at college is one big party!! WOO!! ALCOHOL AND SEX ALL AROUND!!

Just one big party! yup, yup!

That old-man has no idea! NO IDEA! We don't even study things! It's like one big party!! And we have all these fake majors like business, economics, engineering's, chemistry, physics, biology, and sociology. We should just get rid of these majors - they're all so easy that WE PARTY EVERYDAY! WOO!

That 40-60 year old man has definitely got life in college right!

My life is just one big 80's movie! YEAH!

You obviously didn't live in the beltway... there are whites who work at micky d's and are bus drivers.. just drive around in the heartland.

And you speak in the past - it may be taboo, but it isn't entirely irregular to see a non-hispanic non-black working at a chain.. it's a majority, but it isn't out-of-sight.

I guess you might have lived in California or the southern border or something...

irony? 8) Actually I was wondering about that. There might be plenty of college kids who flunk out because of the partying. Have you seen that happen? Others are careful to avoid that. Anyway, it's an entertaining read.

The Mexican cook that I work with is a fine guy. He came from an educated family in Mexico City. He flunked out of college and became the black sheep of his family and emigrated to the U.S. 20 years ago. He flunked out because of the party scene. Sex and drugs and rock'n'roll.

nothing wrong with sex, rock n roll and drugs. But with IQ's dropping like the dow jones. Not a good mix. smoke two joints in the morning smoke two joints at night smoke two joints in the afternoon makes me feel alright. I smoke two joints at times of peace and two at times of war.

Just not too good for keeping a nations brains strong.

nothing wrong with some weekend warrior blasts. Not at all.
and also the crap they still teach us is useless.

Well, sex'n'drugs'n'rock'n'roll is designed to make you feel good. Hello feelin' good, goodbye intellect. Sigmund Freud once remarked that education of the young stops once they become sexually active. That may be a bit simplistic, but I think it's essentially true. The plain fact of the matter is that it is painful to abstain. The main theme of Wolfe's book is that the effort to develop one's mind causes social isolation which is just too hard to bear for most kids.

true. My bud and I were "socially" deprived for sure. he was civil engineering 4.0 and me BS Forest resource Management and Environmental Forest Biology and MS Comp Sci 3.6
the library was our brothel. I remember falling asleep at parties with Girlfriend on lap drinking a beer. It was study 7 days a freakin week. Sundays? No football. saturdays lol. Major study day. I look back now and I wish I did a little more sociallizing. but when u had to have at least a 3.0 and he had to have 3.5 at least. what are ya gonna do?

I wont even talk about the blacks getting full pay in some worthless liberal arts degree that wont do a thing positive for our nation.

I am paying off my loans en mass while I eat beans and rice saving 1000+ a month. riding bike.

I had some help due to grades but not much. But hey its the way it is now.
The strong get beat down while the weak get carte blanche. Makes us stronger and more prepared for our post PO retirement days. :-D
