The Devil is overrun by the evil on these forums

Unread postby Devil » Fri 17 Sep 2004, 10:50:46

As the majority of new "technical" threads nowadays seem to be either started or hijacked by kooks and fruitcakes who are either too credulous for their own good or, worse, stark staring bonkers with no scientific knowledge, I think I'll phase down on the time I waste typing "Yeah, sure!" on each thread. I'm not saying I'm quitting, but I'll no longer make daily visits.

I've changed my Profile so as not to receive notice of replies and I've also removed PO Forums from my normal bookmarks.

However, I'll occasionally hover in the background and I may chip in on the odd serious thread but not on the stupidities that seem to have taken over the forums. The perpetrators of these will, I hope, feel guilty enough to be able to identify themselves. Yes, I am judging you, as the Devil has the right. Some of you are so evil, or have been so misled, that my Hell is far too good for you. As for the rest of you, the doors of my Kingdom will always be open to welcome you, when your time comes. :D

Sorry to see ya go Devil... maybe we'll still see yours posts on the non-stark raving threads?

In a related sense, I have almost completely given up looking at LATOC and FTW. These guys are just waiting and praying for the collapse so they can say "I told you so." Life goes on. The news on this forum, combined with EnergyForum, is good enough.

As I've said in other posts, at some point, a forum like this, to be useful for the specific topic of peakoil, needs to either divorce itself from the guns/run-for-the-hills conversations or be replaced by an alternate board.

I think the focus should be on the following (not inclusive): (a) depletion economics; (b) alternate technologies; (c) investment opportunities; (d) political action (read NOT political conspiracy). There are probably more.

The Devil is overrun

I started browsing here because it was more lively than ASPO, and more even-handed than the other websites related to peak oil. The oil news posts were what I started looking at first, but eventually started reading some of the topics in the forum. I started to get to know what each of the regular posters were like, and especially enjoyed Devil's posts. I will savour them more so in the future, whenever he has time to spare to post.

I don't have a problem with the conspiracy theorists or the head for the hillers or even the doubters, as long as they have inquiring minds. If they are open to the possibility that they don't know the Truth then you can have a conversation. If they are a "true believer" or talk evangelically about the topic there's not much point in discussion.

Just ignore the nutcase/fruitcake posts. There are also really good posts, too.

OK OK. I take it all back. I agree. They're fine. Maybe I'll even learn something.

There is a lot of good stuff here, and hopefully we'll get some more expert commentary like what Dr. Bahkatari(sp?) has graciously given us to enhance the community even more.

We hope to provide you discriminating posters with an ignore button asap.

That said, anyone here who has PHP experience on Linux etc... could volunteer to help us accomplish this. It's not really too difficult technically, but could take some time to accomplish...

We of course value everyone's contributions, and thank everyone for posting.

I agree that containing threads to topic is very valuable, and something we encourage. That's balanced against censorship often however... one man's bla bla bla... tough call.

As it says in the thread descriptions, the Planning Forum is really the place for the "What would you do if..." threads. There is some legitimate cross-over though... :?

We also hope the "Experts" forums can become a much more structured place where only approved posts are accepted.

Any suggestions or other assistance is most appreciated.
The problem is, of course, that not only is economics bankrupt, but it has always been nothing more than politics in disguise... economics is a form of brain damage.

I don't know about you guys, but to me, Devil is one of the most interesting and enlightening assets on this forum. His knowledge just blows me away sometimes.

So, you'd better stick around at least somewhat, sir!

Diabolos,

What is really needed is a FAQ that does not "slam" some of these cockeyed schemes, but informs readers/posters of the bare and often theory deflating Facts.

That would cut down on the number of very shaky "we solved peak oil" posts, and give you and others a place to point the newer members.

Of course really if you feel a theory or a scheme is "Bunk" (and most are) you can avoid diconcerting yourself simply by not posting on that thread.

If you find a truely "scientific" site for energy concerns, please do share it with us.

As for anouncing "I'm leaving" in internet forums, it is usualy a bad idea.

1. Your not likely to change the forums much by just up and quiting.

2. You appear to others to be a "Spoilt Sport", "Drama Queen", etc. (notice I said appear, as I do not really know you) And veteren internet posters give very little sympathy to such individuals.

3. While you left the door open for futher dialoge in your posts, we know that means you'll be back anyway...so why bother with the "I'm Leaving" type post to begin with????

I'm sure you understand that I am not as educated as I think I am.
However, on occasion I have been able to correct you (in mostly non energy matters), so that proves that you can learn things here, no matter how smart you think you are. (BTW, I know you ARE really informed and intelligent, at least in the energy field.)

I'm back, for just the ten seconds it takes to peruse this post. Since my original post in this thread, I started a single new one in Energy Technology, just to keep my hand in.

I have, on occasion, skimmed through the ET Forum, and things are not appearing to improve; in fact, some threads can be described only as downright frivolous, not to mention slightly unscientific.

However, the main reason for my posting here today is to thank those who have said good about your not-so-humble servant. I do look forward to jumping in on the odd serious thread, if I feel I can make a useful contribution, even if I refuse to converse now with the purveyors of male bovine excretum.
