We will be surrounded by automotive infrastructure, requiring individualized transportation, but unable to afford the car.

The roads (in the us) were paved ca 1900 to make life better for cyclists.

at that point I'd rather 'gas up' myself.

And I agree with soap, a canteen, and a towel. Some toothpaste would help as well. Also, have your place paid off before they repo it.
