Correct spelling: "a lot"

Folks, it keeps coming up.

Correct spelling: a lot

Incorrect: allot (unless you mean to assign a share or portion)
Incorrect: alot

Let's get our spelling under control here!

take care with your lessons: allot means to assign a share or portion and is the correct spelling.

You are correct. However, I have seen it repeatedly used in place of "a lot".

In fact, at least here, it seems to be the most common misused version.
Such as "As oil becomes expensive there is going to be allot of political pressure to allow the removal of such mitigating procedures and gadgets. "

While we're at it, the word "lose" has just one "o", dammit. "Loose" means something else entirely, and sometimes suggests the opposite. :x

An apostrophe IS NOT an announcement that an "S" is coming up. The only proper usage for the apostrophe is to contract two words, (isn't), or to give possession, (Steve's Pawn Shop). With that being said:

Correct: prove (as in to prove someone wrong)
Incorrect: proove

Its: to imply belonging (The cat licked its wounds)
It's: a contraction; short form of it is (It's almost too late to save the world)

To: (among other things) In honor of (A toast to the queen)
too: also (He's coming along too), More than enough (She worries too much)
two: the number 2 (Two games to one)

:-D

Time to goose step down the tree lined roads and sing! Grammar Grammar Uberales!

Chill out folks. While misuses are anoying we realy dont need to spend MORE time on this site grammar and spell checking every post...

That would cut into the time I use to plan my sarcastic and sardonic comments. And no one wants that now do they...
Every morning a gazelle wakes up, knowing it must run faster than the lion or be killed. When a lion wakes up, it knows it must outrun the gazelle or starve. It doesn't matter whether you are a lion or gazelle, when you wake up you'd better be running.

The historical fact is that those who have grown up on Usenet and other Internet forums use the incorrect forms "alot" and "lose" quite a lot. It has nothing to do with intelligence of the posters, but it has everything to do with absorption of other people's (bad) habits. You can go back to Usenet posts from 15 years ago and you will find the same mistakes. This did not happen anyplace else.

My favorite usage from back then: at one time everyone on Usenet liked to use the fancy term "ellide" to indicate that some part of a post was deleted. This had more to do with the sense of iconoclasm that Usenet participants felt back then. Ellide means the same as delete, but why not set themselves apart by using a $20 word?

How about this line from Dylan's 10,000 Men:

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'T')en thousand men on the move,
Ten thousand men on the move,
None of them doing nothin' that your mama wouldn't disapprove.

A quadruple negative that is very hard to unravel. Would Mama approve or not of what they were or weren't doing?

Mama would approve. A quadruple negative is just two double negatives, you see, and so you might even go as far to say that Mama strongly recommends it.

Try replacing 'mama wouldn't disapprove' with 'mama would approve':

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'N')one of them doing nothin' that mama would approve.
Now it sounds as though mama doesn't approve of anything! 8O

You forgot to cancel out the "None", and "Nothin'". This would lead to the final sentence being:

All of them doing everything that mama would approve.

Sounds like Mama is either a very successful drill Sargent, or so laze fare that they could take a dump in her mouth, and she would enjoy it.
