$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('PMS', 'V')isitors to this site can think what they want to.

I know that's the prevailing opinion, PMS. Which makes me ask, how serious are you about Peak Oil then, if you are not willing to exert some self-control? I don't mean to put you personally on the spot, but really -- is PO a game or is it for real?

People on peakoil.com are highly critical of the media, of governments, of consumers for not taking necessary steps to deal with PO.

Wouldn't it be a sign of integrity if PeakOilers were to make the same demands of themselves?

MonteQuest complains that people don't understand him and his worldview. I'm sympathetic, but I insist it is the writer's job to make him or herself understood. If you're a pro, you don't blame the reader.

Why don't we push ourselves -- to write better -- to know more -- to pay attention to the terms we use -- to think more critically -- to make peakoil.com a better place . It won't hurt us, might even make us better people.

I can best answer you by quoting what I just said:

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'B')art, your concerns about public perceptions are natural given your line of work. I'm not approaching this from the same angle though. I'm only talking to fellow peakoilers.
Self-control? You are talking about it from a public relations viewpoint. I'm not putting any spin on it for the public. I'm not writing for The Energy Bulletin. I can understand why you would use the word 'game' given a lot of the kinds of posts I make. The core issue, though, of peak oil is not a game to me even though the posting in this forum aspect for me sometimes is. Its OK though. I applaud all seriously minded peakoilers. We all have our temperments.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'T')he word 'doomer' could perhaps be defined thus: efforts to ameliorate the situation won't work.

Why?

As Trespam has pointed out many times, there are no absolutes.

For me, being a "doomer" means I think that mankind is in a desperate situation, and that we have a track-record of making bad, often violent choices when desperate.

The reason I point out the potentially devastating consequences of depletion, is indeed because I want to do everything possible to address the issue... despite the fact that I think we won't. (or perhaps because of that).

We may very well go down the evolutionary toilet... but it won't be because I sat & did nothing.

My belief that we are headed for big trouble is precisely why I participate here.
The problem is, of course, that not only is economics bankrupt, but it has always been nothing more than politics in disguise... economics is a form of brain damage.

Aaron, maybe it's time to be more precise about language. The terms we use to describe ourselves have real-world consequences. According to my dictionary, doom means "death, ruin, unhappy destiny."

If one stands for hope and action, then one should not call oneself a doomer or play around with that term. I'm afraid Aaron, that you have a sorry record when it comes to Doomerism. You care too much, do too much. You have lost the right to call youself a doomer!
