We've been turned into infants

Unread postby parainwater » Fri 02 Sep 2005, 19:52:55

One thing I seem to have noticed is how helpless people have become.
I realize many of them are old or handicapped and cant help it but there seems to be
a real shortage of reasoning ability and self reliance. I think most of those
people at the superdome would stay there untill they died if someone
didn't come get them. Since buses are able to get there the water cant
be that deep. I would have long sinced walked out of that area and even
made a raft if need be out of scrap wood or whatever else I could have found. Anything
to get out of that cesspool. Can you imagine what it is going to be like
when self reliance is a matter of life or death. When food is too expensive
or unavailable as well as everything else. People are totally dependent
upon the "system" for their survival.

You been brought up in a just-in-time environment, the supermarkets shelves always look full when you walk in, no matter how much people checkout at the till. You live in the land of plenty and hunger is unimaginable.

How long does it take for the just-in-time system to fail? UK was working on the theory of 2 weeks, here we have seen it fail in a day.

I don't know- I've been to new orleans a few times... the city's basically surrounded by swamps (oh sorry, the 'bayou') for miles in every direction besides the coast. I don't think they had a choice.

They probably could have got out if they'd been LET! The authorities wouldn't let them out of the Superdome-now they probably could have tried something when they did let them out-but by then they were weakened from hunger and thirst-have to been to Louisiana in August? Its phuckin hot and humid and it will suck the life right from your body. Trust me, this is my thirty-fourth summer here.8O

Yep, the Reapers seem to be short of strollers (and stroller-pushers) to make the journey to the farm.

When I lived in the US I once remarked to a collegue there:

"If there ever is a world war III the surviving americans will starve because teh electric can opener won't work."

He laughed, then thought for a bit and said:

"Shit, you're right."

You are dating yourself snow because folks here have much more experience with a drive-up microphone than a can opener.

Of course many have been conditioned to be passive and be taken care of. Why do you think the government wants to control the school system? The motivation is to make the masses easily exploitable and not rebellious threats, but the effect is also to make them unable to take responsibility for thier own lives.

It is clear that the government can effectively fly in George Bush for a public relations filming, but they they are unwilling to effectively help people on the verge of death.

Probably Chaney is too busy trying to divert most of these funds to his friends to let this be an effective rescue operation. Lots of people showed up with thier private boats to go searching and were turned away because of safety reason.

On this issue of snipers, I think that these people are paranoid. There may have been shooting by drug adicts trying to steal drugs from someone, somewhere, but this it rediculous bull that snipers are shooting at rescuers, total bull s**t.

I have to agree.

Perhaps this is the first sign that Darwinism is finally returning to modern lifestyle ... first time since early 1900's :-)

If you are stupid enough not to evacuate that's your own fault not the governments. Everyone is blaming the federal government for not getting them out sooner!!!!!!!!!!!

Okay I know the bleeding hearts will hammer me with the fact they are poor and don't have transportation etc etc. but bottom line is they had 2-3 days notice and they could have arranged some form of transportation out of the city.

IMHO it's either laziness or the fact they don't care. Either way it's their own fault.

Self-reliance is just a myth. There is no such thing. Humans, as a social species, have always evolved in social bodies to ensure their survival ( called tribes in ancient times, nations nowadays ). Everybody is reliant on "the system", even those who claim to know better. Put one of them on an isolated island and he'll be dead in a matter of weeks. That's just how it is.

Seeing some people solely trying to blame those stranded in NO for their own demise is just a telling sign how decadent the US has become. A house divided against itself cannot stand.
Freedom is up to the length of the chain.

We? WE?? Hell man MY tribe had the foresight to get out of there, and they're the one who will be shit on too, the middle class and working class whites, who packed up what they could and got out. And they'll get zero help, zero funding, they're not the right color.

Oh yes, pity the white folks in America. Excuse me as I shed alligator tears...

And the white people who stayed? Are they traitors to "the cause?"

As far as the people in the Superdome, they were kept there by armed National Guardsmen. That fact was written in any number of articles that I read this past week. I think the fact that a crowd of desperate thousands didn't overwhelm what little authority was there kinda throws a monkey wrench into the whole notion of chaotic anarchy all over the streets of NO. How about some credit for that show of restraint? I suppose it's easier to chalk it up to their collective laziness. I guess it fits better within the context of the irrational bigotry that some folks espouse.

FYI, there were many, many people who walked over the bridge to relative safety. The majority of people you saw at the Superdome were old, infirm or too weak to do any major walking. Anyway, it's not as simple as walking to the next town. New Orleans is surrounded by water and swamps and the area they would have walked to was just as devastated in the storm.
