I blame capitalism and also communism for being a lousy alternative.

I blame anyone who had more than a single child within the last 100 years. I also blame those who wanted children but couldn't do so because of circumstances outside of one's control. That includes my parents. My opinion is that we were already in overshoot 100 years ago, and we needed a one child policy then. Now is too late.

Imagine if the world stabilized at 1 billion people (the population 200 years ago). Peak oil would be so gradual, we would have time to adapt society on renewable energy technology that exists today. Imagine an advanced society with a stable 1 billion people all powered by solar, wind, ethanol, and tidal power. People would work on farms, transport food on ethanol trucks, the personal vehicle would not exist, people would have many of the electric appliances we use today (but in compact and efficient form). Such a society would last thousands of years longer than the industrialized growth based economy we are in today, barring any environmental catastrophes. If the planet is not devestated, and the human race not extinct, the above description could be civilization in a thousand years.
