Trigger Effect & other non-PO-specific movies?

Learning about Peak Oil made me remember the fictional movie "Trigger Effect" from way back in 1996:

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0117965/

It is a little known drama/suspense movie starring Elizabeth Shue. It's been many years since I've seen it, but best I can remember the electrical grid goes down for many days without notice or explaination, and chaos starts to overcome the city, people start fleeing in their cars not really sure where to go, then they run out of gas and things start going to crap. The movie focuses more on the drama, interaction, and psychology of the people rather than electricity problem itself. I bet the people who made this movie didn't realize that they could have been foreshadowing all our lives in the future.

Does anyone know other movies about catastrophic problems like this besides the obvious Mad Max series?

The most important thing I learned from "The Trigger Effect" (which I have on VHS) is that when breakdown is happening, the absolute best thing you can do is STAY HOME. (hope you got all the stuff you'll need). The second important thing I learned is that the best time to get your guns and ammo is BEFORE there is a need for them. Don't end up standing in a Star Wars premiere size line outside the gun store waiting for the priviledge of paying 3X for a shotgun. The final important lesson is how those who presume to rob suburbanites in a crisis are likely to come to a quick end.

That is certainly the scene from trigger effect that stands out in my mind...the run on the gun store with the line wrapping outside of the building and the guy trading his watch or something for a twelve gauge.

Mosquito Coast

Unread postby realeyz » Tue 20 Sep 2005, 08:06:13

Mosquito Coast is one I watched again recently that I viewed with very different eyes now that PO is replete in my consciousness. I love the homestead and village that the family builds in the jungle and found myself wanting to learn about fish farming.

Good movie though.

My favorite is Tank Girl- When global water is privatized, Tank Girl battles the global utility, teaming up with transgenetic kangaroo men. Or maybe they were dingos-- At last a movie with a female hero who dresses like Cyndi Lauper. It is partly cartoon, and quite original.

Of course, there is The Postman, which I just recently checked out, as part of effort to slowly educate my wife on PO. The event that caused civilization collapse was war, though climate was mentioned as well.

Anyone have comments on either The Firm or Minority Report?
