The Peak Oil issue is now on Exit Mundi, a collection of end-of-world scenarios. collection

My personal favorites are BOIL!, UCHE-UCHE!, and HUMDIDUM! The CRASH! page looks like it was written by Matt Savinar himself! If you think everything is hunky-dory, it's a nice sci-fi type read. Otherwise, let's get scared! 8O

Yeah, I love that site. I emailed the webmaster months ago about Peak Oil and linked him to Matt's website. I guess he must have gotten enough suggestions about Peak Oil to put it up. Glad to see that he did.

:) This is great. After this site, an all new favorite time eater. I wonder how fun it would be to get a placard that says "The End is Near!" on one side and have a different reason every day on the other. :)

Their Peak Oil section sure could use some revision. There were a number of factual errors.

But since they're meant to be humorous more than anything else, I'll let it slide.

[smilie=icon_scratch.gif] Hmmm... I wonder how many of these things are covered by my insurance.

I know that it says something about 'windows broken by thermonuclear events' , but I'm not sure about the other stuff.

It is a funny site, but I wish they would not put Peak Oil on a site like that, people will not take in seriously.

exit mundi perspective

Postby wisegoat » Mon 04 Apr 2005, 23:00:38

I just came across this.. probably old by now but it's an iinteresting perspective none the less:
$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'A')nd even then, we'd have to have some luck. There's a particularly nasty glitch in the theories even the economists don't know about. For in fact, the biggest risk we're facing is not even the Oil Crisis itself -- but rather, the invention of some kind of new energy source!
Say we all stop using oil tomorrow. That would mean that suddenly, we will stop putting huge amounts of carbon dioxide into our atmosphere. Now, this is probably not a good idea. Over the years, we've got huge amounts of green plants and especially carbon dioxide-breathing plankton and algae on our planet, courtesy to the greenhouse effect. If we suddenly stop producing greenhouse gases, these plants and algae will suck up all carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere.

An interesting perspective, but...

Postby UIUCstudent01 » Mon 04 Apr 2005, 23:38:35

It's an interesting perspective, but I don't think it's a valid argument. Because
A. PLANTS EXISTED AND FLOURISHED WITHOUT HUMANS PUTTING CARBON DIOXIDE IN THE ATMOSPHERE. IT'S A CYCLE.
B. I question his source (if he has one) thinking correlating the greenhouse effect with the increase in plankton and algae.
C. The greenhouse effect (climate change) will not be good for any current species. And it will happen too fast for current species to evolve. It's disinformation about the whole topic. (And it isn't ended because oil runs out - there's still large amounts of coal.)

I think the argument is that plant populations have increased due to an boon in available CO2, and that if we stopped burning fossil fuels (completely and suddenly) that plants would overshoot the resource (CO2) that is allowing for an increase in carrying capacity.
I honestly don't know if this would cause a sudden enough decline in temperature to bring on a new ice age (or even to what extent global temperature would be affected) but the point is moot as we aren't going to spontaneously stop burning fossil fuels
When there's no more oil, can I have your speakers?
No?
Alright, what about your baseball cards?

I love that website.

Like a year ago I emailed them saying, "hey, look into Peak Oil." Well, I guess they got enough emails that they decided to research it and posted that article.
