Peak Oil Videogames Pt 1

Today's game:

This title is in the tradition of games such as Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat. In it, you are a fighter that travels to various parts of the Middle East to literally battle the ever increasing cost of oil. The more expensive the oil, the more difficult the opponent.

The game finally ends when you beat the last barrel of oil which if left undefeated, will cost enough to launch the world economy into an irreparable recession.

I'm surprised it isn't like double dragon, since the sprite on the left is clearly taken from that game.

I don't think there exists a game about peak oil, but it's a good premise for a strategy game. You could manage a community trying to survive and rebuild post peak.

There is a peak oil senerio in Sim City3000. Pick the town with the oil-burning plant and set the year to 1950. Now without using the cheat codes or building another oil-plant try to get a steady power supply up before the year 2015 when your oil-plant dies. You have four stratageys coal, nuke, wind, or solar.

And is the transition easy for the little sim people to handle?

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'I') don't think there exists a game about peak oil, but it's a good premise for a strategy game. You could manage a community trying to survive and rebuild post peak.

I'm making a few that aren't about it, but do use peak oil as heavy factors in their storyline. Both are nowhere near complete, no screenshots at this time, but one is being made for RPG Maker XP and the other is going to be an all out Grand Theft Auto style game in full 3-D.

The first is a strategy RPG called Legend of the Pale Horseman set 'Not far from now...' in which the United States is in a state of anarchy over $150/barrel oil and $7+/gallon gas. Civil war is beginning to brew and entire cities are cutting themselves off from the American government and the economy, with the federal government acting with brutality. You play the role of some badass leatherclad biker named Atzlan Hellion who seeks revenge after the United States Army mounts an attack against the small town of which he lives, killing scores of residents in the process, but eventually being fended off by the state militia. Hellion has two goals: uniting everyone in his state to seceed from the United States, and to accomplish this, to break a well-respected farmer-general with the capability of uniting all the counties in the state out of prison. Hellion soon expects the Army to return with reinforcements, and him and his boys decide to ride that night to prepare an ambush.

With this RPG, I hope to accomplish creating a Final Fantasy Tactics sort of game, but with none of that magic and sorcery and dragons BS. You'll have various job classes for your characters, a set for males like 'Thug', 'Berzerker', 'Sniper' among others and a set for females, like 'Valkyrie' and 'Amazon'. You will also be able to train attack dogs, hire mercenaries to join your gang, ect. In battle, you will even be able to use vehicles like motorcycles to aid movement(A vehicle will take up 2 of 10 character slots possible in battle).

There will be branching paths and the player will be able to make decisions in key parts of the game that change how the story progreses along with the endings.

With this game, I hope to instill a sort of primal fear in the audience like the first Mad Max movie did. One example is a planned cutscene in some major city(Like Memphis, TN, or Atlanta, GA) where an armed mob of about 500 escaped convicts, militia crazies, and unruly, angry bikers kills off an entire squad of bodygaurds, some national gaurd units, and a SWAT team in pursuit of a democrat U.S. Senator they view as their enemy, surrounds the U.S. Senator's GMC Yukon, shakes the SUV and beats on it, tries to open the door handles but fails, breaks open the windows as the car alarm starts going off with the senator frantically trying to start it, flips the vehicle over, drags the guy out, and begins tearing him apart like a chicken thrown into a crowd at Ozzfest, ripping his hair out with their bare hands, 8-10 or so grab an arm and try to pull it out of its socket tearing off skin in some places and ripping his sleeve off his suit and shirt at the same time with it covered in blood, strip him naked by literally tearing his clothes off and then lop his genitals off with a machete, repeatedly kick him in the face after throwing him to the ground, eventually knock him unconsious with a gooseneck wrench to the back of the head, and then hang him on piano wire from which it is slowly tighteed and after about 1 minute his body falls from his head and they shove a pike up his hanging windpipe and parade it around the city with the head and pike mounted on top of a heavily armored early 80s model Ford F250 pickup with spikes on the wheels, offroad tires, battering ram, a giant clitoris painted on the hood, a mounted machine gun on the roof, these huge 1,000 watt concert speakers rigged up in the bed with their own generator playing "Balls to the Wall" by Fozzy and the bikers revving their motorcycles as loud as they can speeding down the street with the townspeople parading on the sidewalks cheering as the truck goes by with the Senator's head on a pike!

This is a strategy RPG that will be made for RPG Maker XP.

The other game is an action RPG titled Police State. It is an RPG in the vein of Secret of Mana but with a Grand Theft Auto style interface and in 3D. I am using a programming language to make it. It has a cyberpunk setting crossed with a post-nuclear apocalypse setting and also uses peak oil as an explanation for the game's world. Think of taking a Mad Max setting, combining it with a Blade Runner setting, and throwing it about a decade into the future. Given I have over 50 pages of material online about this planned game, read about it here if you insist:

I'm still in playtest/revise cycle, but I'm building "Peak Oil", a board/strategy game that I can post once it's done. Next session is in September, it may be the Golden Child. Ride the curve up in leapfrogging exponential glory, then figure out what's your best option for longest survival as it all goes pear-shaped. Engage in Covert Actions. Declare fatwas. Lay pipe. Explore for oil and burn it. Exploit the third world, or become it. Trade, blockade, invade.

The trouble at the moment is that it has taken too long to play. It will be complicated, but no more so than necessary (about as involved as Avalon Hill's "Machiavelli").

One good part about it is, once you download it and cut out pieces, it will not require electricity!
As Canadian as ... possible, under the circumstances

I don't know Toecutter, I like the premise but someone might have beaten you to it.

Sklump, a peak-oil board/strategy game is a cool idea, I hope gaming still survives after crash, and the low-tech D&Desque type games will definitely have the best chance to last.

My game isn't a real time strategy like the one you linked. It's a strategy role playing game, kind of like Final Fantasy Tactics, Tactics Ogre, or La Puecelle, in which you can enter into each batle 10 different characters, and move them on a sort of chess board, and select from a series of options and commands with the ability to move each character when it is their turn.

What's interesting is the game you linked is after the United States has divided itself. My game takes place during the United States dividing itself, which is the key difference. In my game, you'll actually get to see the anarchy as it unfolds, instead of playing a game set after it unfolds. Mine has its civil war more centered on peak oil and increasing loss of civil liberties as opposed to a terrorist attack though.

Interesting, none the less.
