Hi moderators, recently I sent your URL to a friend of mine to introduce him to the PO theory. His comment was: "They don't say who they are - on the web, that makes me very suspicious of them."
Also, you have a menu item "Legal notice" which represents some sort of contract between you and the users. However, if I do not know who exactly are the persons with which I make that contract, I rather think it's invalid anyway.
May I kindly ask you therefore to disclose your real names and addresses?
Even more credibility could be created by also giving education and occupation and a statement about any sponsor or other ties.

Maybe an "About Us" page might help?

That should be pretty reasonable, since a fair number of people will look for it first thing when they hit a new site. I know I do, sometimes.

Thanks for your reply, Aaron.

Stopping by:

Not before we have a mutual appointment... :)
Also, travelling to the US has become very tedious.

I very much appreciate your effort to build and maintain this site.

I just agree with lowem that it would lend this site more credibility if we would know who you are, what your ties are and why you are doing it.
(And if you do not want to disclose your full name and address, then maybe you could at least explain why not.)

I'm not sure this is requested of me but here I go.

I stumbled into peak oil by reading a book called The Hydrogen Economy by Jeremy Rifkin if memory serves. The book offered a utopian view of how the world will be when we no longer depend on foriegn oil, this being when solar panels on our houses break H2O down into H and O fueling not only our homes but our vehicles. After I finished the book I put it down and didn't give peak oil another thought until I stumbled on to Life After The Oil Crash by accident, which in turn led me to this site. I'm actually of a blue collar background in the mining industry. I'm currently a middle of the road peaker if you wanted to label me. I think there is trouble ahead but that humanity will survive in a style similar to the 1850s through 1910.

I believe I was volunteered to mod because I have a basic understanding of the concept and was one of the earliest active posters. I'm also a news junky and therefore submitted many news items and links. So far I have done small edits such as those requested by users and deleting double post as well as hate threads. Aside from that my input is minimal and often absent.
You observed it from the start
Now you’re a million miles apart
As we bleed another nation
So you can watch you favorite station
Now you eyes pop out your sockets
Dirty hands and empty pockets
Who? You!

Hi Davidyson,

like dmtu, I'm a stumbler. I'm a video editor by trade and was working on a program about bio-diesel. Curious, I started to do my own research into the viability of alternative fuels and stumbled into dieoff.org. Bemused at first, fascinated later, eventually terrified as I searched the web for some witty debunking of the theories illuminated on Jay Hansons site. After about nine months of trawling the web for peak oil related material I came across this site.

As you can see on the left, I am located in Sydney, Australia.

Thank you,

John, rowante, aaron,

to be fair:

- (can't disclose my real name yet)
- age 34, married, 3 children
- living in Potsdam, Germany
- software project manager for a large German software house
- have been: IT journalist, advertising texting guy, business consultant, software developer and software distributor
- no affiliations
- strong interest in simulation, particularly in developing a "war game" type simulation of a post-peak world
- currently working at an "energy facts" site to bring all the facts to one place for reference and better informed discussion
- also planning to derive on the basis of these facts a model telling us how much of the oil peak can be compensated by renewables and coal

Came accross this site when doing intensive web research after a friend of mine from England gave me Heinberg's "The Party's Over".

Happy? :o

Good point reading between the lines a bit. If we don't change the world we've made, the Lord of the Quarks will see fit to scatter our pattern!

I am a former National Park Ranger, environmentalist, ecologist, professional photographer and writer. I also work as a construction superintendent (my post -peak oil occupation). I came to peakoil.com as the result of investigation for a book I was writing. I have been involved in environmental issues related to ecological degradation and global climate change for over 30 years. I am 53 and live in Sedona, AZ just south of Flagstaff. I immedately began to post several threads that have become mainstays on the forum and was asked to be a moderator.

I'm MissingLink

I am the missinglink because of a joke that occurred in an engineering office I worked in as a draftsman. During a project an engineer recognized that production would have great dificulties making a certain link. It was a connector link of sorts.

My name is Lincoln so this engineer suggested I name the part, "The MissingLink". He then approved the prints and out to production they went. As predicted, production could not get these links made correctly.

Finally this all went to the engineering manager. He was pretty upset with "The MissingLink". He was so mad! Everybody but him really got a good laugh out of the deal.

So I use MissingLink as a screen name and for games as well.

I am Lincoln.

So to I want to know your name but have chosen to not reveal your self$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'd')avidson, - (can't disclose my real name yet)

I volunteered to be a moderator here because I thought it a good cause. I am kind of busy with work right now and am not so involved but I still read at least 5 minutes a day.
Peace out!

Well, I'm kind of new too, but I have a habit of posting a lot, no matter whether I have anything really useful to say. (I'm working on it, and respond well to the occasional smack upside the head).

Here's me:

I'm Tamara Griesel
34, married mother of two small children
I live in Silver Spring, Maryland (I may say Wheaton, Maryland at times, the two are roughly interchangeable. It's a close in suburb of DC.

I have a Masters degree in biology, but mostly I'm home with my small children right now, since child care costs more than I can make. I teach part time for Kaplan Test Prep and Admissions, where it is getting increasingly difficult for me to justify spending my time teaching testing strategies when my skills would be better put to use learning everything possible about permaculture and teaching that.

My husband is an archivist.

If anyone happens to need one of those, let me know. The DC area has already crashed. Or is at least close to it, in terms of quality of life.

Thank you for your service at public education, peak oil preparedness and offering a community to those in need.

I have been on various survivalist and peak oil forums. Most of them banned me, others had poor participation so I left on my own accord. But you seem to have a good mix of freedom of speech and community here.

Yes, community and compassion are two important qualities for the peak oil, post carbon survivalist to have.

My first experience with a 'peak oilers' forum was not pleasant when I joined this forum.

http://www.peakoilstore.com/forum/index ... c32f87;www

They banned me after 3 hours of so.

That forum seemed very extreme from the forum owner right down the ranks - trickle down theory I guess. Lot of flaming and hatred directed towards me...and all approved by the forum owner.

Other forums such as http://www.frugalsquirrels.com/cgi-bin/ ... matebb.cgi or http://www.survival.com/forum.htm banned me after a few posts.

This forum called my posts on peak oil and overpopulation propaganda and alarmist and shut me down after few posts. http://www.politicsforumpoliticalworld.com/

Some forums kept me on longer and tried to be more open to discussion http://www.simpleliving.net/discussionforums/ but the end result was the same for me...a ban from prejudice.

And some forums, such as misc_survivalism_moderated@yahoogroups.com would not ban me outright, they were a little more open minded...they would just delete my posts.

Yes, I have had my share of prejudice with online forums. I've been on over 300 of em in the last 10 years in many subject areas. I have been banned form the vast majority of them - yet I have never had one fight or was abusive with anyone.

What was my crime?

Searching for truth.

The difference between an authority and an authoritarian is this. An authority speaks from a place of truth and such speaks as an authority. Whereas an authoritarian rules by fear and not by truth. For the truth stands on it own and the authoritarian stands on their ego.

Always remember - there is no shame in discussing and searching for truth - the only shame is when on blocks the discussing and searching for truth.

"The highest object that human beings can set before themselves is not the pursuit of any such chimera as the annihilation of the unknown: it is simply the unwearied endeavor to remove its boundaries a little further from our little sphere of action." ~ Huxley

BTW

I am a transplant from L.A., lived there 35 years and moved in 1989 to the NE US to 'city-country' as opposed to 'city-city'. I had a big shock the first time the electric went off for more than 5 minutes in my new local. That was the day I learned about self sufficiency about 17 years ago.

Bought some candles and a flashlight and went on from there. But that only clued me into 'short term survival' with my preparedness aimed at 4 to 6 weeks.

Then came 'peak oil' ' peak NG' 'peak food' 'peak water' 'overpopulation' and had my eyes opened to long term, indefinite survival.

Take care,
