I'm not sure if any of you are aware but in the Board Kiosk forum is a thread related to the financial situation of the site. Aaron has recently provided us with an oversight of the situation and here's how it goes.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Aaron', '
')
We are trying hard to meet our growing traffic requirements, but it's an uphill battle.

Donations have been anemic, and advert revenues are not meeting our hard costs. I do web design & hosting solutions for business, and donate all my hosting fees, but it's not allot. Dan pretty much pays the difference out of pocket, which is painful of course.

Worst of all, we are hitting a CPU boundary, and need to upgrade again. And we have dual processor box now! Next upgrade basically doubles our hard costs...

ouch!

I'd sell some blood, but they don't do that anymore.

We could further commercialize the site, but want to avoid that.

In truth, we would prefer to have NO advertising at all... or a bare minimum.

You would think that 3 or 4 thousand folks could pony up $400 per month between em, to keep things rolling... but it ain't so.

And we feel funny about begging for $'s

I even feel funny explaining this in here... like pointing out the obvious ya know?

I suppose many people see the site, & assume it's connected to some business or other interest... when nothing could be further from the truth.

So I do post threads like this one on ocassion... because some things are more important than my pride.

Bottom line - We are still short of our hosting fees this month, and nowhere near what we would need for a sustained upgrade.

Ain't savin the world a bitch?

Here's how I see things.

This website is the primary source of information for me on an issue that is going to affect the human race in the next couple of decades and beyond. If I want to see what is happening in the world of energy I will come to this site first. If I want to know how to live off the grid then this site is my first port of call. If I want to debate with people as to how we got into this mess then I come to this site.

You get the picture.

Basically this website should end up being the primary source of information for people who want to learn and debate about PO and it's impacts. You can learn the basics from another site like Savinars or Wolf at the door but eventually the need for information will lead you here.

As most of us are aware this website is a non-profit site that wants to primarily not have to rely on advertising to meet it's funding needs. Therefore the need falls on us to help provide the funds for it's existence and continued growth.

This is where you come in.

As Aaron mentions above there are more than 3000 members on this site. A certain portion of those don't post reguarly but if a certain amount donated $10 or even $5 a month to the site then funding would not be a problem.

I've decided from this month onwards to donate $10 a month to this site and even more if I can in order to help it expand and run. If another 39 people done the same then we could easily pay for the upgrade and keep things running. Also with a weak dollar it means I'm paying less than others.

The way I see it is that if TSHTF in the next decade then no amount of individual preparation will get us through. It requires a huge team effort to get us through the changes that need to be made. That applies to Pollyannas and doomers alike.

So in the spirit of community and teamwork I feel I have to invoke the immortal words of Bob Geldof at Live Aid 1985.

"Give us your fucking money".

I'd be happy to spare a couple of bucks to help keep the site going, but where do I go exactly to donate?

I vaguely remember there being a campaign drive for the site months ago. There was a convenient Paypal link on the front page to donate. I think it should be returned on a permanent basis. Just have the Paypal link, with a dollar amount of received cash VS cash needed. Reset the #'s every month. That should work....

I think I made this suggestion in another thread when the subject of donations came up: Let's go back to the old donations button, where a monthly goal was posted & we showed how close to that goal we were getting. We also showed who had contributed (but giving donors the option to be anonymous, of course).

Right now, the donate button is sort of buried in the side menu, and doesn't really jump out at you. I think if we make it more visible and attach a goal to it, you may find a big increase in donations. I'll go ahead and chip in something today, and I encourage everyone who frequents the site to do the same. I remember when it went down last time because of bandwith issues, and I don't want that to happen again.

Really, really simple. Shut it down and replace it with an almost static single page announcing the need together with a progress bar and a PayPal button. Abstinence will bring out the best from us in a couple of weeks. Otherwise, it was not worth it to begin with ...

It's sometimes too expensive to donate from remote areas (like Poland), since the fees for transfering cash sometimes excede the transfered amount :/
It would be nice of you to add an adresse for those that preffer to avoid banking system.

EDIT
$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Carrie', ' ')where a monthly goal was posted

All the quotas are listed above the PayPal button.. I thought POers are A+ at maths.

I see now that the budget goal is shown, now that I've clicked on the link & actually donated.

I still think it should be more visible on the front page, with a goal visible too (like a fundraising "thermometer" or something).

I agree. Make it more visable on the front page. Put it underneath the Peakspeak window where people will actually see it.

50$ in 15 minutes :) Wait another couple of hours and it'll be enough to send Aaron for his well deserved holiday :)

For those of us who don't do PayPal, is there a physical address so we can send a money order?

Well, that was pretty quick. The bar asking for funds on the side of the page is now quite the success. It only needs $2.38 to go, with a goal of $500.

I agree. A physical address for donations would be my preferred method of donating.

It's very easy to donate if you have a paypal account. Took me about 1 minute.

We are working on that for you as we speak. I'll post a physical address on the donate page later today I hope.

Our sincere thanks to all our generous members.

We will keep trying to find inventive new ways to save money publishing peakoil.com, and look for ways to fund the site which keeps advertising to a minimum.

It is encouraging to know so many people take this topic seriously.

PO may suck... but we intend to fight the good fight for as long as we are standing.

All donations beyond our hard monthly expenses will accumulate in a "war chest", which we will use to pay for upgrades and such. If we can maintain a decent budget, we would love to expand the site by adding new services and content, like syndicated articles, advertising & other promotional activities.

As always, your suggestions & comments are most welcome.

Aaron

Dan, Aaron,

At what point would it be more cost effective to drive PO.com from your own server, with it's own broadband? Is that not a goal that is even within the realm of sanity at this point? If it's not yet cost effective at what point will it be and approximately what would be the costs involved? I'm sure this has been mulled over by both of you so I have to wonder.

The sort of bandwidth we are using would be terribly expensive to lease ourselves. Not to mention the physical location, (which we don't have), and the boxes.

When we are about 10 X our current size it begins to become a possibility.

Or we may end up as the village postin tree...

At least until the roving reaper bands find us. 8O
