$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', ''')Peak oil' spells cataclysm for U.S., oil theorist warns
Sunday, August 21, 2005
ALEXANDER LANE

Think high gas prices are bad?

Get a load of what ex-oilman and ex-Princeton professor Kenneth Deffeyes believes are following closely behind:

"War, famine, pestilence and death," he said, eyes wide and voice deep. "We've got to get the warning out."

The threat? Peak oil.

Deffeyes IS the MAN.
I'm getting a big kick out of his new book. It's better than Hubbert's Peak.

by the way...is it "deaf-eyes," or "deaf-face"?

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'I')n the long term, the nation will compensate with clean-coal and nuclear energy, along with renewable sources like wind and solar power, Deffeyes says.

Hm that would make him a lander or a moderate right?

To really appreciate Deffeyes you have to read BOTH of his books, one's a real oilman's book on how the oil biz really works, you'll find yourself with much more background and yes, admiration for Halliburton, Schlumberger, etc., since however evil and octopus-like those companies are now, they had truly noble, honest beginnings. And you'll learn a lot about how oil's really made and found. Then his second book draws on the first a lot in its explanation of why we're up oil creek w/o a paddle.

Deffeyes on CSPAN2 Late Tonight (Sunday)

Unread postby Lora » Sun 21 Aug 2005, 18:57:01

Deffeyes is on CSPAN2 at 12AM EDT, 11AM CDT tonight. Talking about his latest book.

http://www.booktv.org/General/index.asp ... chedID=370

Beyond Oil: The View from Hubbert's Peak
Kenneth Deffeyes

Description: Geologist, author, and Princeton University professor Kenneth Deffeyes writes that world oil production is no longer increasing in his new book, "Beyond Oil: The View From Hubbert's Peak." The title of the book comes from petroleum geologist M. King Hubbert, who formulated that the world's oil production would reach its peak in 2000 and begin to decline rapidly until the global fossil fuel supplies went dry. Mr. Deffeyes believes that the world's oil production would peak at the close of 2005 and that the eventual absence of fossil fuels would have a devastating and potentially catastrophic effect on world economies. The book also lists the potential replacement fossil fuel energy sources and the ways in which they can be utilized effectively.

I've seen some interviews of him before, he kind of rambles a lot when speaking but his material is good.

Deffeyes is sticking to his November prediction, eh? I've been wondering about that. He hasn't updated his site since March.

It's amazing: the show was recorded in March, which seems eons ago, given what has taken place since then.

Pretty good, but if you've been up on peak oil for the last couple of years, there's nothing new in the program.

Apart from the excellent content, I found his way of speaking a bit off-putting. He sounds like Thurston Howell III from Gilligan's Island.

CSPAN often puts their content on their Web site, in RealMedia format. Maybe they'll do that with this.

A cable TV hook up and VCR and TV capture card could be used to create a digital file. I don't have cable TV though.
