$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('frankthetank', 'A')nd we all know that school systems (AKA Government welfare systems) don't have a clue of how supply/demand works. :-D :-D :-D

I use to work for a university.

The message is simple. If stores start running out of food, you'd better have more then a couple cans of spam on hand.

Yeap. I wasn't flaming, or contesting the dynamic. Just a poin on accuracy.

What this demonstrates is that we need public order laws that specifically penalize pushing in crowds, and require a minimum distance (no body contact) between strangers in a line.

And then when things like this occur, go in & make a few dozen arrests, put the people in the pokey overnight, and penalize them to the tune of a $500 citation each.

After a few such instances, suitably publicized, people *might* start acting like they have real manners.

If we do it there's a chance to avoid mob scenes during shortages. If we don't, that laptop melee is only the beginning.

I wonder how people will react when they have to start waiting in gasoline lines again...?

As a historian I am sceptical indeed of all these people who post that socieity will immediately disintergrate into disorder and cannibalism the moment somebody is denied something.

There may be some disorder but I expect it will be short-lived once the government takes control of things with a firm hand, explains what's going on, presents a plan and introduces rationing.

People can actually put up with a good deal of suffering and deprivation without going mad or dying of fear. 8)

While it is true that modern people are dreadfully spoiled they are not fundamentally different from their ancestors or the dignified Africans mentioned earlier. People are tough, and so are the societies they form.

When the chips are down they look out for each other. We're a bit out for practice now, but the instinct is still there and can be revived at a moment's notice. I no more believe that modern Americans are sub-human any more than I believe they are superhuman. In any case if the US fails in this manner it will be the only society on earth that does so.

You need to remember that when TSHTF all that econobabble about infinite growth and omnipotent technology will be instantly discredited and a vast sea-change in popular opinion will take place and as the tide of oil receeds we may well see treasures of idealism and good neighbourliness long hidden in the capitalist muck.

Hopefully all similar sales in the future will be held in the same area where the military tests out their latest kill machines.

I don't think these self-serving cowboys will last very long when things are...different. They might very well end up killing each other over materials, just like their dipshit gold rush ancestors did. I just hope they can smash each other to pieces in a designated area, away from people who are trying to create instead of destroy. But maybe these people will get a thorough beating, or simply be shunned by their family until they mature. There are, of course, more ways to teach someone table manners, but I suspect that many people will not have that kind of patience.

So what kind of people are prone to this kind of behavior? It appears that it is anyone who values objects over human life. That's just about everyone where I live. Damn.

I'm located in LA near large pockets of urban poor. I stay the hell away from shopping malls on ordinary weekends let alone holidays or in situations like this.

Right now I am seriously contemplating learning the details of winter squash and various beans. With a solar cooker and a little water you have a fairly decent meal with a significant amount of protein.

As for eating long pig, I have no idea. The first thing that comes to mind is what sort of wine would go with barbecued marauding neighbors? A nice rich cabernet or merlot? A petit syrah or tempranillo? Help me out here. I'm a vegetarian/seafood/occasional poultry/white wine type of guy

Do you think Mr. Rove will be up to the task or should we get Alfred E. Newman to handle this! Maybe they will handle this problem with the same finesse that they have exhibited in Iraq.

Humans are actually a white meat like pork. Just trust me on this one.

So you should drink a white wine like Kendal Jackson or maybe a nice Pinot Grigio.

But a rich Carbernet? Of course not. It would taste strange in comparison to the lighter texture of your neighbor.

Thank you, kind sir, for your post-apocalypse culinary advice.

I find that pinot grigio goes quite well with farmed Tilapia or Fanny Bay oysters. It is one of my favorites and best of all, Trader Joes has it on sale for seven bucks a bottle :) Glad to hear that it will go well with the Jonses as well. Now, as the Jonses continue to maraude my permaculture squash and legume patches, what size photovoltiac system shall i need to upgrade to in order to freeze all that meat or should i just smoke them a second time (after i smoke them first with my FN-FAL) and make a few years worth of "Jones jerky"? They are quite a large clan and should they persist in raiding my fields when TSHTF, it shall be quite a chore to "keep up with the Jonses"

No!

This talk of cannibalism is depraved and entirely misleading. Society is not going to disintergrate just because people are deprived of Twinkies and a 3000 mile Caesar Salad.

It would be fairly easy to cut back on oil consumption by government controlled rationing, demobilising a good part of the military and halving meat consumption.

Anyone who thinks this it outrageous or impossible has little idea of the toughness and resiliance of ordinary people in a crisis, of which historical examples without number abound.

Europeans and especially Americans have been living a lifestyle over the last couple of generations that can only be described as grotesque; it is now returning to something closer to normal, something that we and planet earth can live with.

There may well be local and sporadic disorder, even deaths, but I don't think any significant number of people are going to end their days on the neighbour's barbeque.

Stop fearing society. It's all we've got. If it fails billions die and we are back to the Stone Age.

This is not a signal to prepare for the Stone Age but to exert ourselves mightily to ensure that society does not fail.

Stop listening to all this scare-mongering media propaganda about how fearful and fearsome everyone is. It's all part of an evil corporate plot to keep everyone isolated.

There is a lot of goodness in the world too, and PO may just help bring it out of us.

That's one of the most reasonable posts I have read since a long time, well said!

Also don't underestimate people, the sociopathical nintendo kid of today is the hardworking, helpful citizen of tomorrow, I dare to take bets.

You don't know how much good a little bit of hunger and bad times can do to people. If anything I would say that the wealth and affluence of our times has turned more people into isolated zombies and ticking time bombs than any desaster before.

Thanks, Free. People need to have a little historical perspective on all this. None of the problems emerging from PO are actually insoluble, but they will require change in the way we live, think and organise ourselves.

It's change or die, so we're going to change. It really is as simple as that IMHO. :-D

PS: a shameful confession for a scholar but I don't recognise the Latin tag. Please translate?

Well I can't give any guarantee about spelling the latin part right either!

But you already translated it without knowing! :)
