$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'R')ICHMOND, Va. (AP) -- A rush to purchase $50 used laptops turned into a violent stampede Tuesday, with people getting thrown to the pavement, beaten with a folding chair and nearly driven over. One woman went so far to wet herself rather than surrender her place in line.

IKEA stampede
A grand opening sale at a British IKEA store sent six people, including one man who was stabbed, to the hospital. The Swedish furniture warehouse had planned to stay open for 24 hours to mark its opening, but the store closed after 40 minutes when crowds started to stampede. A similar riot occured when an IKEA store opened last fall in western Saudi Arabia, where three people were killed. IKEA expressed regret: "IKEA could never have predicted and are genuinely overwhelmed at the outcome of the evening and the consequences that the opening of a home furnishing retailer has had."

No! I vaguely remember a time (because I am old) that people use to argue about the solution to a problem, but at least they agreed what the probelm was. Now, people can't even agree what the problem is. :(

Yes, this sort of behavior will make the dieoff larger and more violent than necessary.

:) :(

I find this both extremely funny and extremely sad -human greed leading to death (and what's so great about IKEA anyway?). Maybe this is a glimpse of our future in microcosm?

Ikea opened in Dallas (Frisco, actually) a few weeks ago and supposedly, whoever was there first on opening day would win a $2,500 shopping spree. The lady that won it camped in front of the store for a week. No sign of a riot or a horde of consumer-driven madness, but contests like these certainly don't help the sheeple stay calm and collected.

The great thing about the media is that it never lies or distorts the
truth.

The second thing is that in pursuing this noble end it only reports the
miseries of life since for some odd reason the people in this forum
and generally get a morbid kick out of ruminating on gloom, doom and
bad news.

Does the media focus on amount raised in charity, the millions of
volunteers caring for disabled and elderly, the humanitarian funds and
donations? Or the volunteer firemen and emergency services? The
cop who got killed trying to save someone?

Nah. who gives a shit about that.

We're just mindless animals, thieves, killers, desperados. WE'RE
MONSTERS!! That we are. But we're also much more than that.

But u go right ahead now and scour those headlines for tidbits to
confirm your depression.

There are thousands of people who wouldn't be able to get out of
bed, eat, shower or walk without thousands of anonymous volunteers
anf others working WAY! beyond what they're paid for. And that's
just the tip of the iceberg.

But no!. Your next door neighbour is going to kill u with a machete
because food prices wet up. No way you'll organise a food co-op
and eat better/cheaper. Shit no! You'll kill the fool with your knife
before he kills you.

Get a grip.

Nor you in mine. I wonder if fear breeds fear and once the cycle
starts it's hard to break.

Michael Moore's doc on amercan gun culture was noteworthy for showing
one of your cities- 1 side canadian and the other US. The canadians
had their doors unlocked and news wasn't filled with fear and guns.
The yanks only blocks away were paranoid, fear ridden and gun toting,

As ye sow..

I saw that, Bowling For Columbine. Moore is a propagandist so I have to wonder if that was real or not. We have Canadian posters, so let's ask them. Hey threadbear and UE, are you folks up there living in a peacable kingdom where everybody leaves their doors unlocked at night?

While I'm not one to forward Mike's points, it was also stated that the Canadian's had more guns than the Americans... something to think about. It's about the culture.
