I don't think Rush is mimicking this Buckley guy. It goes further back than that, he's mimicking Herman Goering. Goering said what Rush is saying a long time ago. Here's a famous Goerging quote:
"Naturally, the common people don't want war, but after all, it is the leaders of a country who determine the policy, and it is always a simple matter to drag people along whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. This is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked, and denouce the pacifist for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in every country." This was said at the Nuremberg trials.
Pay close attention to the last sentence. Its exactly what is happening now with this "war on terror." This message is being repeated by Rush, O'Reilly, and Fox news everyday "the terrorist are after us, and if you don't support this war on terror, your putting the country at risk." This is taken directly from Goering.
Am I a liberal for being against this undefined "war on terror"? Am I against the war on terror if I'm against the war in Iraq? I'm not sure they are the same thing.
No matter how the above questions are answered, I find it hard to believe that I'm unpatriotic or a "liberal" just for being against the war in Iraq, when I did serve in the military, jumped out of planes the whole bit. So, how is Rush any more patriotic than I am. He didn't serve in Vietnam, trick knee. Was he unpatriotic then? What about Cheney, Rummy, Wolfo, none of them ever served, are they unpatriotic? Is there then a timeline for being a patriot? Maybe, if liberals are those that don't support the war, that just applies to any war after Reagen was elected. Or maybe, its based on age. Anyone that supports the war after they get to be 35 or older is a patriot, but anyone over that age that doesn't support the war a liberal (even if you previously served). What about my former platoon sergeant that just got back from a tour in Baghdad. He doesn't support the war, is he a liberal too? If so, how can he be a liberal and Rush a patriot? Rush has never done anything but talk into a mike high as a kite. How is that patriotic?
I guess, all germans proved themselves patriots when they stood bye and watched millions go to the death camps. If that's the definition of a patriot, then I'm a liberal. I'll go with that.
