How high do you think it will take the gas to get before all the hackers get angry and start messing up big oils and the governments websites in protest. Plus all the other crazy things they do.

You'd be surprised how often it happens already.

When are the hackers going to get smart about this?

True hackers never want to damage other peoples computer systems. They are just driven by ideologies like 'information should be free'.

So what could hackers do to help society deal with this? Hackers can make mass mailing worms that broadcast news about oil depletion, climate change and other global issues.

When oil depletion and climate change have had their devestating effect on humanity at least no one gets to say "I never knew." Each of us knew and each of us was responsible for how it played out.

Brilliant thinking.

Hackers can also help build infrastructure that will make it easier to power down and get sustainable. We are already doing that; personally my part has to do with telecommuter systems; there are many and bigger pieces of the picture having to do with utility control and industrial process control software, sensitive hardware for monitoring the performance and efficiency of various systems, and so on.

Every field of engineering has something to do in the bigger picture. We'll do what we're called on and/or inspired to do.
