I'm eating homemade beef jerkey tonight

Recipe:

1. Head to your nearest full-service grocery store and get 2# brisket trimmed of all fat, cut across the grain, 1/8 to 1/4 inch cuts

2. Marinate in 1/2 worchestershire 1/2 soy sauce for 24 hours or one day, whichever comes first

3. Line oven w/tinfoil (you can probably find plenty in your baseball cap)

4. Set oven to 200 degrees

5. Skewer strips on a... skewer.

6. Take your oven rack and put it in the top slot, then put skewer on top of rack such that the strips of beef hang down between the bars of the rack. It should look like this ---I---I---I---I--- and so on.

7. Bake/roast/whatever for a couple hours until the beef is dry and has all moisture removed.

8. Pah Tay.

yum. I make my own jerky too. I use an excalibur dehydrator.

one good tip is to find the cut of meat you want, and then ask your grocery store to thinly slice it for jerky. then you usually get uniform slices and don't have to deal with cutting the meat at home... We also grind up the jerky and make pemmican bars...jerky blended to a powder, with a bonding agent, usually almond butter (tallow for the real deal) dried berries and nuts. Shape in to bars, and place on wax paper. The ultimate food in my book. Great for backpacking and outdoor pursuits (like running from a mob of zombies during a peak oil fuel riot) :)

Cool! I want to make my own jerkey too, since I love the stuff and meat for it is not too expensive, anyone try beef heart? The local store has beef heart for something like $2 a lb and it looks really good - nice and red and healthy.

In fact it's amazing how cheap the "odd" meats are, Sunnyvale is considered an affluent place but there are tons of ppl here who shop only at the supermercado/carneceria or Chinese, Korean markets and eat amazingly cheap because it's all they can afford (and shhhh.... eat better food too!)

I love supermercados, I just picked up 16 lbs of Bananas for two bucks! :-D
Oranges were 6lbs for a dollar and Mangos were 3 for a dollar! a 3.3Liter of coke cost $1.17! Damn those gringo stores, rippin' me off for so long!
