I live in bangkok thailand. and work about 15km from home currently i use train and bus like 45 % of people in bangkok to get to work. there has been some qutie major changes to travel even in peak hour. the non aircond buses which are cheaper are very overcrowded now and the aircond buses have empty seats on them. the price for non aircond is 5.5 baht to 7 baht per trip amd air cond is from 10baht to 24baht per trip these prices went up twice in the last 3 months due to high fuel prices which is for petrol is 25 baht per liter
the amount of traffic in peak hours is the same but more people using the non aircond buses. off peak and weekends a lot less traffic than 3 months ago. and people seem to be staying at home more on weekends as the shops are quite now on sunday afternoons this normally the busest time.
there has been a lot of campains to reduce energy use in all sectors to reduce oil imports.
the other thing i noticed is the increasing use of the rail system of both types metro and intercity. the richer car owners are using the metro more now than in the past. the biggest change has been on the intercity which is price fixed on 30 year cycles ie cannot changes prices untill 2020. where you can get standing loads on major overnight intercity trips and you have to book 1 month in advance if you want a sleeper.
i would say that thailand will see a massive growth in its rail useage over the next few years as oil prices increase.
but its metro needs be expanded if they want to reduce oil imports
the people hear are very price sesitive to the increasing oil prices even though its only been 2 baht a liter over the last 4 months.
not sure what will happen when it gets to USD$100 per barrel
