Temporal Blast Radius

An atomic blast has different amounts of damage for various distances from ground zero. There are maps available for most cities that show the effects of a nuclear weapon based on distance from the city center.

Peak oil has happened, will happen soon, or in the not too distant future. With all the very bright people we have hanging around here, we should come up with a 'temporal blast map' based on the idea that peak oil is a ground zero in time. What are the effects we can expect base on peak oil + x-years.

For instance,
PO+1 = increased economic turmoil, recession, slumping auto sales, increased unemployment.

PO+5 = massive food shortages, return to local agriculture, roving bands of reapers.

What can we put together as a 'map' of what may follow peak oil?
Civilization is a personal choice.

PO+1 = we're fucked a little

PO+2 = we're fucked a little more

PO+3 = we're fucked a fair amount

PO+4 = we're fucked a lot

PO+5 = jesus tity-fucking christ.

After the major wars between todays super-powers are over, and most of human civilization has collapsed, Iceland will emerge as the new dominant energy capitol.

With their vast resources of geothermal power, Iceland with quickly become the leading military power in the post-peak world.

I for one, welcome our Icelandic Overlords with open arms, and embrace the beliefs & traditions of our Nordic masters.
The problem is, of course, that not only is economics bankrupt, but it has always been nothing more than politics in disguise... economics is a form of brain damage.

Too bad

Average oil consumption per citizen (barrels/year)
France 12.01458333
Iceland 23.11666667
US 29.95482

France has a better starting position. And they have an infinite supply of hot air it seems.

In 20 years those TGV's will be running on garlic fumes.

I think MonteQuest's Canary in the Mineshaft thread is a great start on peak oil realization and the fallout.

There are two major economic impacts that are about to hit the west IMHO. Peak oil realization is one but the other one is the accelerating offshoring we are seeing which at some point must result in job loss in the west. Which one will hit first is up to fate I suppose.

Key theme in either situation is cascading bankrupcies for those that depend on cheap oil (airline industry) or cannot adapt to manufacturing offshore and as a result of either we will have huge job loss numbers.

Many workers chasing fewer jobs = deflationary environment. Until to peak oil or unemployment we will continue to have inflation as oil prices rise though.

I do what i can. :) Glad to pass a smile around. It's the least I can do since I can't pass a bong or lead the world.

Being 21 is tough. One can't lead the world, but one know's how to solve its problems (or so one thinks).

Yeah, because the Vikings were so warm and fuzzy the first time they ventured out.
