I am impressed with the recent editon of the Natinal Geogrpahic. It shows the progress of alternative energies - wind, solar and biowaste. It also shows the European lead in all these.

Perhaps it will cause us North Americans to wake up and trigger a competition to catch up.

Indeed...

Let's find every possible method to continue our insane growth.

If we really try, I'm sure we can strip the planet bare.

That's what it's here for right?

We are pretty smart.. I'm sure we can mash up all kinds of things to make fuel. And coal! We have lots of that... We can level mountains, and just strip that stuff right outta there.

And fish! We can "cleanse the seas" with giant UltraNets. Gotta be lots of oil in those suckers.

What else can we burn?

Oh heck... let's just burn it all, & dance away the brief summer of mankind.
The problem is, of course, that not only is economics bankrupt, but it has always been nothing more than politics in disguise... economics is a form of brain damage.

Interesting, is it not, that stability - neither growing nor shrinking - is perceived as stagnation and is by implication bad. Growth - exponential and limitless - is an unquestioned virtue.

A cell that does this is called a cancer; it will, given time and opportunity, kill its host.

A race that does this is called human; it will, given time and opportunity.....

Why be so downbeat? The alternative energies that NG related are renewable not consumable. They have minimal negatives attached to them.

And they're scalable? Have a strongly favorable EROEI? Won't divert crop land from food production to biofuel production? Won't require lots and lots of limited resources to implement? And will produce cheap, easily transported, easily used, high energy-density fuel? I think they will not meet these tests.
