Gas For $3 A Gallon? Place Your Bets Now

Postby Carlhole » Sun 07 Aug 2005, 17:22:31

http://news.tbo.com/news/MGBEZQY51CE.html

Gasoline prices keep rising, but you still might get a chance to pocket some cash now that an online bookmaker is laying odds on how high gas will go.

PinnacleSports.com set its first line Friday on the cost of a gallon of self-serve, regular unleaded gasoline in the United States. Now, anyone 18 and older with access to the Internet can bet whether pump prices will rise or fall.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I wonder...

Would it be legal to do something with this at PeakOil.com? Betting pools of some sort...

DoomerWars! The raping of the factions...

Or simply, make a contribution to peakoil.com outright with the understanding that the money will be placed on certain category of gasoling price bet. Results posted, noses rubbed in it, etc.

It's always more interesting when there's money on it. I know, I used to play the commodity markets with other people's money.

You're right. I don't see any links on the site either. Maybe the news of the gas betting decision broke before the site has had opportunity for update.

I sent an email to the company asking how to bet on gas and I'll post their reply when/if I receive one.

Just curious. How would you want to bet given that Pinnaclesports.com could accomodate you?

I think this thing's gonna ratchet up to about $75 by the end of 1st qtr '06 with some increasing volatility of about +/- $15 at any given time.

I would bet yes, by the end of the year we will be paying $3.00 a gallon. Hell, the prices yesterday in Pullman rose to $2.59 a gallon for regular 87 octane. I would place $10 on it happening. What odds are they giving?

What these odds mean is that if it is +150, a $100 bet will yield $150 (and you get your wager money back, of course). Conversely, -250 means you would have to bet $250 to win $100.

Here are your odds:

Prices from fuelgaugereport.com for regular.

U.S. gas average of $2.40 broken by 01/01/06. Maximum Wager: $200 USD.
Yes +120
No -130

Gas average hits $3 in NYC or Los Angeles by 01/01/06. Maximum Wager: $100 USD.
Yes +355
No -140

U.S. gas average of $2.35 broke by Labor Day 9/04/06. Maximum Wager: $200 USD.
Yes -253
No +233

I'm really confused about your bets. take for example:

Gas average hits $3 in NYC or Los Angeles by 01/01/06. Maximum Wager: $100 USD.
Yes +355
No -140

Now there are two scenarios

A)

Bet $100 on Yes. If you win, you get back $355. If you lose, you get back $0
Bet $140 on No. If you win, you get back $100. If you lose, you get back $0.

B)

Bet $100 on Yes. If you win, you get back $455. If you lose, you get back $0
Bet $140 on No. If you win, you get back $100. If you lose, you get back $0.

Which one is it? scenario A or scenario B ??

Ohanian, it's B) on the +355 bet (that's what your bet will pay, plus you get your money wagered returned to you), so you are correct that you get back $455. However, if you bet $140 on the no bet, and win, you get back $240 ($100 paid, plus the amount you wagered).

Carl, you have to join their site, which is free.
http://www7.pinnaclesports.com/SignUpFo ... ieTest=yes
Then, you'll have to make a deposit there to be able to play. The easiest way is via neteller or credit card.

Plain jane 87 unleaded is now $2.70 where I live. We are not too far away from $3 in SoCal.
