Toyota's chairman claimed electric cars are actually worse for the environment than hybrids

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'T')he claim by Toyota’s chairman that electric cars are actually worse for the environment than hybrids has caused some controversy among automakers and EV fans. Akio Toyoda, Toyota’s chairman, mentioned that due to the infrastructure in Japan, one EV in the country creates the same level of emissions as three hybrid vehicles.
https://supercarblondie.com/toyotas-cha ... n-hybrids/

Controversial indeed. But with a mix of electric propulsion and blue gasoline the emissions are basically less than recharging in a coal based infrastructure, which, believe it or not, is what most of the world uses. Yes I know NORWAY NORWAY. But How about CHINA CHINA, AFRICA AFRICA, INDIA INDIA. Green dreams that in a decade or less the whole world will be running on solar and wind power is are just that, Dreams. But people are waking up to the fact that the broad populations of the planet simply can't afford that electricity, it's too expensive, and too intermittent. Toyota's assertions are right on point.

Battcars are dreadful polluters from manufacture to end of life. How many homes in America for example have rooftop solar? And now that uptake is ending, as proven by the collapse of all the solar companies, it will be fossil fuel charging. They have basically reached PeakRoofTop adoption, dictated by what the impoverished populace can afford. Collapsing economies, the headlines say one thing but the spending habits say another thing entirely.

Real World people telling it how it is:
One year ago

Hybrid Cars Find Favor As EV Sales Slow, What That Means for Tesla
- I remember they called Toyota fools for sticking to hybrids
- They also gave BMW grief for building car platforms that can be used flexibly for ICE, hybrid, and EVs. It turned out to be a pretty good design decision.
- I can’t speak for everyone but as soon as my model S shits the bed I’m going back to the Toyota Prius. Tesla’s FSD is ass, the cruise control won’t work if there’s fog or rain - which is almost as infuriating as the car randomly slowing down on the HIGHWAY because it sees a 10MPH sign at a rest area - and the stupid fucking tires pop all the time because the sidewalls are so small. Fuck Tesla
- Time for price cuts baby, imagine people taking out a loan on a car and then a car that depreciates more then every other brand. Double whammy with extra cream.

- Elon tweeted the price was going to go up in April. Then cut the price by $1,000s Imagine you listened to him, rushed to take out a loan, and he immediately cuts the price. It's insane that people still defend him
- I seriously don't negates any EVs in the future (though, I won't consider Tesla anymore) but every single cars is so expensive here (Canada), I will probably just buy a used Prius eventually, I barely drive, there's no cash to be saved going EV.
- Yoooo I thought the Prius Prime was only electric! Now that I know it’s a hybrid with an estimated 550-600 mile range I’m totally set on it. It almost makes me want to trade in my model S.

Revolt on the RealTesla sub, it has 125,000 members.

Over on the 3.4 million member teslamotors sub it's all positive spin still, obvious avoiding the legion of bad news of late. Even a thread of an Optimus robot handing out popcorn to some kids. I wonder what would happen if it had a glitch and went spastic, as they sometimes do. Bashing the children? Big nail in the coffin for robotics then.

'Hybrids Are A Road To Hell' In EV Race Against China: Former Nissan Exec
$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'W')hile Nissan may not exactly be ahead of the game right now, the Leaf was pivotal for the BEV industry—which means Palmer's words on EVs carry a bit of weight. In a recent interview with Business Insider, Palmer touched on how the West is losing the race for electrification supremacy. The winner? In his eyes, China, which essentially has a cheat code to winning thanks to the rest of the world's weak commitment to electrification.

"Hybrids are a road to hell. They are a transition strategy, and the longer you stay on that transition, the less quickly you ramp up into the new world," said Palmer during the interview. "If you just delay transitioning to EVs by diluting it with hybrids then you are more uncompetitive for longer, and you allow the Chinese to continue to develop their market and their leadership. I honestly think it's a fool's errand."

90%: Hertz Doesn't Want Its Rented Teslas Back
$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'H')ertz is struggling to get rid of its stockpile of depreciating Teslas. The EVs—which were once billed as the keystone in their business plan for the future—have been burning a hole in their bottom line for years. Now the rental company wants out so badly that it's trying to get buyers to just outright buy their rented Teslas instead of returning them.

One extremely compelling offer was first posted to Reddit (and reported on by CarScoops) by someone who currently had one of Hertz's rentals. According to the post, Hertz sent an email to the renter soliciting them to take home the very car they were driving instead of returning it. The car being offered up to the buyer was a 2023 Tesla Model 3 with under 30,000 miles. And the price? $17,913—which, frankly, seems like a freaking steal and even had folks in the comments asking "what's wrong with it?" for the price.

Going back to our first story, Palmer recognized that one of the reasons consumers still aren't buying EVs is simply because they're too expensive. One potential solution he identified was selling cheaper EVs with smaller batteries. That makes the biggest trade-off the range. Palmer said that smaller batteries would require heavy government subsidies to bolster national charging networks. So, sure, less range, but more places to charge. But if more cars are charging more often, that could also mean more clogged-up charging stalls as EVs and public charging unevenly grow together.

All of that being said, would you buy a cheaper EV with a smaller battery if the charging infrastructure were better? Or are you deterred by cold weather sapping range during road trips and the uncertainty of how well that path could play out? Let me know in the comments.

What can I say? First he makes the case that half-breeds are killing the Battcar "Solution" and then ends with the mass rejection said Battcars and a rant about how making little ones now, with little batteries, and big government subsidies, will save the sinking USSEV. I think they are losing the plot? Not that "their" plot was ever rooted in reality anyway. Death to ICE, Death to Half-Breeds, Death to anything but the Holy Battcar.

Not much. You parrot, which isn't you saying anything, other than offering uneducated commentary that simply proves why education is important to not look like what you are.

Why do you even care? Don't buy a Tesla. Feel free to waste 5X the fuel costs on whatever your favorite ICE powered machine is. Hell, you are probably so ignorant with basic math you don't even KNOW how much cheaper an EV can be because you can't figure out cost/kWh and convert that into miles driven.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'N')SW still plans to introduce a road-user tax on electric and plug-in hybrid drivers within the next two years, but it is still not clear how its policy would avoid the same High Court-decided fate as Victoria's version. The New South Wales Government is still interested in rolling out a per-kilometre road-user charge for electric (EV) and plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEVs), despite a similar tax in Victoria being struck down by the High Court.

It comes amid a Federal Government proposal for a national road-user charge – to make up for shortfalls in fuel excise revenues – which remains in the wish list stage, but has been deemed inevitable by top ministers.

They'll find a way to tax them, though I think they are already taxed in the sense of being over priced and having low resale value, which will only get worse over time.

Re: Hybrids: Seven Worries, Seven Answers

Unread postby AdamB » Wed 10 Sep 2025, 08:21:29

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('PeakOiler', 'I') own a hybrid Honda Insight, and I'll respond to the seven worries from my own experience with the car since I bought it in July, 2003.
W1: "Worry: Hybrids have complicated technology that is difficult or expensive to fix."
I have only taken the car to the dealer for routine maintenance up to this point, i.e tire rotation and oil changes. I did replace the small 12V battery myself when it failed about 3 months ago, (not the main 140 V battery--no way would I touch that. Besides, there's a big warning not to open the cover to the battery bank: "No user servicable parts." and "Warning! High voltage. Electrical shock can cause death" ... or something to that effect.)

W2: "Worry: Hybrids have limited battery pack life."
So far I've had no problems with the battery bank. I will reach the 80K miles mark before the 8 year warranty expires. I'll keep ya posted if and when I have to service the main battery or other electrical components.

W3: "Worry: Hybrids have technical problems like stalling and sputtering"
Never had that problem with the Insight.

W4: "Worry: Hybrids do not pay for themselves to justify their premium cost".
All I can say is that it has saved me over $5000 in gasoline vs. my other vehicle, an F-150, since it gets three times better gas mileage than the truck. If I had bought a different small car, say a Geo Metro, I would have still saved a lot of gas money, but not over 5 grand.

W5: "Worry: Hybrids do not offer the driving performance needed".
The purpose of a hybrid is to conserve fuel. One should not expect the performance of a sports car.

W6: "Worry: Hybrids will not hold resale value."
I'm not planning on selling it. If the PO doomers are right, this may be the last car I buy.

W7: "Worry: Hybrids do not get the level of mileage promised".

Yeah right. Perhaps that's true with the other hybrids, but not the Insight. I'm actually getting about 1 mpg better than the EPA estimate of 56 mpg with the auto transmission! :)

Turns out plenty of us have similar experiences PeakOiler. With hybrids like yours and even full EVs. Looks like you were far ahead of the curve in figuring something out that the uneducated still don't know.

Precognitive you were!

neighbor up the street sent her hybrid hyundai off on a flatbed truck last week, the electric motor failed and it lost half it's power. She wouldn't drive it in, unsafe I was told. It's under warranty but it's still a pain in the ass I'm sure. This is the problem with these halfbreeds, they have two complete motor systems, so twice the complexity and twice the opportunity for failure. I'm at loss as to why people buy this junk but then I'm at a loss as to why they do most of the things they do. Of course she didn't pay for it, used equity in her home so she could feel better about being an old bag. Now she's an old bag in a flash new car with a bigger mortgage

Damn glad my hybrids and electrics have been built in America and Japan.
