THE Hybrid Transportation Thread pt 2(merged)

How to save energy through both societal and individual actions.

Re: THE Hybrid Transportation Thread pt 2(merged)

I know most people don't want to hear all this news, this reality of the collapse of once cherished dreams, but I'm going to keep posting up the collapse of it. Why? Because you don't get off that easy, you can't pretend it didn't happen and crawl under a rock of future Hopium.

Already I see the masses flocking to the next bubble, the AI bubble that promises the Tomorrow Land future. They want to pretend that the hundreds of thousands of pointless wind generators doesn't matter, that the millions of Battcars searching for a top up amongst the detritus of the charger network don't exist. That the Shale revolution that didn't bring prosperity never happened.

It's all chatter now about AI and how it's soooo Amazing. Well you know where that leads, the same place every other stockmarket bubble to date has led, down the toilet as far as benefits to society at large. Until people wake up to the 2008 conventional PeakOil turning point and it's consequences they will forever be Lemmings running towards the cliff edge. Ahead of them many have already leapt over, Salesman, Accountants, factory workers, IT folk and engineers. People who have lost their jobs and can't get another and are out of the game, because in Western society if you have no money you don't exist! No one wants to know you. You have to face these hard facts, accept them, and act accordingly or your future will be scavenging in the rubbish pile of a once proud nation, as more and more are, every day.

Cool. How about a thinking child's question? Please define collapse. Because as best I can tell, everything you whine about has been going on for longer than you've been alive. So collapse isn't homelessness (been around forever), or changing values in various currencies (been around forever), or oil volumes going up and down (been around since 1859), or even how those who can't think or reason and drop out of school continue to plague the world (although they are useful on their knees in service to their King).

So...define the collapse you are constantly bleating about. While you still have electricity. While you vacation on weekends on motorcycles that run on...petrol. While the internet is up and running allowing you to bleat. While your currency in Australia, just like mine in the US, continues to buy stuff. No gold required, How is it, and something even a moron might understand, that you talk about HOMELESSNESS, and not death by starvation of millions? Be they in insignificant countries like yours, or the most powerful country in the history of mankind, like mine.

Just a question. My bet is you can't answer even the most basic question because blowhards, like parrots, aren't about thinking through their ideas, but just whining and pouting and spewing them out without even the most basic understanding of what they are claiming.

Plug-in hybrids 'pollute much more than advertised' and should be banned from sale in 2030:
Study finds they emit up to THREE TIMES their claimed CO2 emissions

The VW swindle all over again. It's a UK story, and in case you are unaware, the UK is very diligent on exposing fake marketing and dangerous products. They have a blanket ban on GM foods for example, and did the research exposing the dangers of Monsanto's aspartame. After which Monsanto split the company off, changed the molecule slightly, and re-branded it as phenylalanine. Look for that name on your drinks, corn chips, and in many many other "foods". https://www.independent.co.uk/news/worl ... 01176.html

Back to the hybrids

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'C')arbon dioxide emissions from the latest plug-in hybrid vehicles are up three times higher than advertised when their batteries have been fully charged, a green transport think tank has warned. Transport & Environment said that while plug-in hybrids - also known as PHEVs - are being presented as a climate solution and a stepping-stone to full electrification, tests conducted in partnership with Graz University in Austria show that the newest models 'pollute significantly more than claimed on commuter routes'.

I love that, "a stepping-stone to full electrification" Hello, HELLO! We're past that remember, it was all in RBC until 2004, now it's all in Half-Breeds
$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'A')dditional pollution measurements taken from three of the latest PHEVs found that they can emit up to seven times their advertised carbon dioxide outputs on a typical journey through city centres when their batteries are flat.

The environmental group has called for the UK Government to stop providing green tax breaks for PHEVs and ban new models from sale at the same time conventional petrol and diesel cars are removed from showrooms in 2030.
https://www.thisismoney.co.uk/money/car ... study.html

How is the typical hybrid charged? Hint, it's Not regenerative braking. That's insignificant unless you live on the side of the Swiss alps and only ever drive downhill. They are charged from the e-motor/alternator off the combustion engine. Which for those of you who don't understand basic physics, means losses of energy, losses as mechanical energy is converted into electrical storage and more losses as it's converted back into mechanical energy. Go feel the charger next time your phone is plugged in, or feel the side of the blender after you have made a smoothie. Heat losses going in and out, and chemical conversion losses too in the chemistry of the battery as you're forcing one metallic compound to form another.
$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', '
')Lithium-ion batteries operate through oxidation-reduction (redox) reactions, where lithium ions move between the anode and cathode during charging and discharging.
Overview of Reactions
In a lithium-ion battery, the chemical reactions that occur during charging and discharging involve the movement of lithium ions (Li⁺) between the anode and cathode through an electrolyte. The typical materials used are:

Anode: Graphite (C₆Li)
Cathode: Lithium metal oxide (e.g., lithium cobalt oxide, LiCoO₂)

Discharging Process
During discharge, the battery releases energy to power devices. The reactions are as follows:

At the Anode (oxidation):

Here, lithium ions are released from the graphite structure, and electrons are freed to flow through the external circuit.
Lithium ions migrate through the electrolyte and are intercalated into the lithium cobalt oxide, reducing cobalt from a +4 to a +3 oxidation state.
Full Reaction
The overall reaction during discharge can be summarized as:
C6Li+CoO2⇌6C+LiCoO2C6Li+CoO2⇌6C+LiCoO2

I had a visitor today, he arrived in a corolla hybrid. There all the rage up here in Australia. He boasted some amazing 4.3 liters per 100km for it, and that's probably what it got, driving up a level highway for an hour and a half. Hell I get 9L/100km in my V6 across the same terrain so it's not world shattering. I think they just like the quiet takeoffs? But as it silently went down the street I thought of what would happen as it turned up the hill and got up to speed. The gasoline engine would kick in of course, cold, and instantly under load.

It's common sense to warm an engine up before you drive off, to let the clearances set and let the moving parts get a good coat of oil. For a minute or so in Winter especially. I wonder what damage all this is doing to those little engines as they get stressed day after day...

Oh yes it's a problem alright, but there is a much worse one. All hybrids come with auto boxes and the auto fluid needs to be warm and flowing freely for a box to function well and prevent damage. Here is a good vid on it. What a design disaster these halfbreeds are.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mLwlJHVi2Y8

Oh btw, beware those videos that say warming up your engine damages it, most of them talk about people warming up their engines for like 15 to 20 minutes. What idiot would do that? A minute or so is fine actually. All this business about not needing to warm engines is BS from the car manufacturers that want you to wear them out so you'll buy another one off them. It's like the auto boxes they say never need a fluid change. Sure if you want it to blow up at 200,000.

This mechanic nails it. Watch till the the end where he explains why running you engine only short distances, so that it doesn't fully warm up, is bad too. 2/3s of my trips are exactly as he describes and I always take a short run of about 5km after early morning shopping to get the engine fully hot and boil the water out of the engine and exhaust system. Water in the engine, in the internals? Yes, it covered under Brownian motion, where moisture from the atmosphere is transferred into the engine. Engines are vented to the atmosphere in many places. The extra drive is fine for me, I get to run through beautiful countryside by the river, and have a bit of fun with the 230HP.

An anecdote from a PreArse buyer. And yes, they were amazing cars, the engines built to the highest standards from the highest materials. Just as you would expect from Toyota (back in the day)

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', '1')-6 on March 9, 2024 | parent | context | favorite | on: Toyota's hybrid-first strategy is delivering big p...

I’m on the fence about Hybrids now. Past generation Priuses were over-engineered marvels but it can’t be said today. Toyota’s Hybrid reputation was built on top of the Prius so they had to build a lightweight car that would go past 200k miles and then some to show the world that it’s reliable. I own two Priuses so here are my thoughts:

My 2nd generation model is going strong at 190k miles even after surviving a cat theft and a cell degenerated. I was able to buy a ebay NiMH cell for $33 and replace one out of 28. But for a long time, I was still able to drive the car around with a degraded battery because it essentially is a Yaris Atkinson engine. Newer hybrids however, are using smaller engines and a Lithium Ion pack. A Li-Ion pack would have degraded quicker in the hot sun where I usually park my car and with more energy cycling. I’m not sure how repairable Li-Ion packs are now and Ebaying for them is a bad idea.

The 3rd generation had some refinements done but the car I own has been getting reports that it isn’t as reliable as its predecessor. I don’t have enough miles on mine to give you all a good anecdote.
https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=39651821

So buyer beware. All modern cars are substandard compared to stuff built in the 00's. They cut a lot of corners now. A mate just received a brand named solar inverter for his 4x4 and the big cables to link it to the LiFeo4 battery were silver colored. 30 years ago that would have meant a pure silver coating, like on RF feed lines, today, cheap Aluminium cables. Such is the depletion of copper on the planet that even mains powered appliances now are using aluminium wiring instead of copper. I bet they have a great marketing line on how it's soooo much better too

Mild Hybrids? Always new terminology to confuse the poor public..

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'M')ild hybrids, also known as 48V hybrids, are a type of hybrid vehicle that combines a traditional internal combustion engine with a small electric motor and a 48-volt battery. Unlike full hybrids, mild hybrids cannot drive on electric power alone, but the electric motor assists the engine during acceleration

Ok, we got that? Always burning oil ok.

Used Vehicles:
$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', '
')“Overall total loss market values were relatively stable in Q2 2025, and BEVs continued their trend of gradual decline (-1.70%) while ICE vehicles were flatter, with only a nominal decline of 0.21%,” he said. “Plug-in hybrid market values followed a similar trend as BEVs, with a 2.87% decline, while mild hybrids actually posted a 1.62% increase.
https://www.repairerdrivennews.com/2025 ... aluations/

So people want a bit of Green, but defiantly rely on Gasoline.
Full hybrids are going the way of Battcars, the way of the DoDo bird.

Just turn of you're TV set, buy a real car and enjoy a trouble free life. It's like the crypto bubble I posted on, when your sucked into the schemes you can't tell your arse from your mouth. You're blinded by you're own ego. "No way, I'm too smart to swallow a marketing bait! The other 99% of the people in the world have got it wrong."

Oh Dear! I hope kub isn't reading these threads anymore. The priests of Battcar are turning on the Half-Breeds with a vehgence. A couple of years back they were happily including them into their numbers, after all, they were electric, as kub pointed out. Now that actual Full Battcar sales have collapsed they are turning on them, branding them GasGuzzlers. As I have said all along

The Electric Viking lol. A purist in the religion of Battcar, denounces these HERETICS, with frequent reminders of NORWAY, NORWAY. A fabulously oil rich nation with a population of... About 1/4 that of new York. In the world of science we would call that "Statistically Irrelevant."
https://www.youtube.com/watch?app=deskt ... Kz7E&t=278

He says, "now the truth is, if you look at ALL of 2024, Battcar sales increased by close to 20%"
Ahhh, a kub moment, dredging up past glories. But shallow glories since the years before had much greater sales increases. Then he says "Plugin hybrids increased by much much more". Oh this is good, because those plugin sales were actually eclipsed by NON-plugins, which have been raping the Battcar in terms of sales. But our Viking doesn't even mention them, because, they don't plug into electricity, ergo they don't exist in his world.

To round off his flat earth ranting he points to the "laws" saying that by 2035 80% of new vehicles must be Battcar. Well Hello, Hello! They have already backpedaled on these legislations and in 10 years you can bet they will have dumped them all together. Stupid EVidiots...

Another EVidiot, an Australian this time bashes the half-breeds in a delusional vid citing adoption rates in... You guessed it, NORWAY, and two other Woke Scandinavian countries with the combined population of an average Chinese city. Based on this, and the promises of a state wide charger build out, made by the NSW government, he assures us it would be a mistake to buy a half-breed now
Spoiler alert, he's old, woke, and probably a homosexual.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0D0msGJ2gv8

He claims battery electric vehicles are cheaper than conventional cars now. $35,000?
A Kia can be had new here for $16,000. Then he tells us how cheap Battcars are to service, quoting the 45,000km service on his two year old Tesla, $244. The poor sap doesn't even realize that the service costs are built into the purchase price and all he's paying is a nominal fee to hide this fact

Why the interest in China? You figure if they own you instead of Great Britian that servicing General Secretary Xi will be a little easier on your jaw? Get off your knees first, then pretend other countries will even talk to cowards choosing oral service to a King. Enjoy all your water to wash the taste out of your mouth when you are done. Have you shown your boy the proper technique yet? I mean when he hits the age of majority he'll right there alongside pops...with your help and encouragemenet.
