A rather thick book by Vaclav Smil begins by telling theoretical formulas of growth and then goes on to tell about growth of living creatures. Usually when a species grow, growth is slow at the beginning, then there a growth spurt when species is a teenager, then growing stops when reaching adulthood. Smil loves numbers and the book is peppered with numbers, which makes the reading comprehension harder.
The book gets better towards the end when Smil gets to analyze human apparatuses growth. Some subjects of growth are popularity of social media and smart phones. Smil comments society critics opinion about various subjects. About economical collapse, Smil comments it's a great exaggeration of modern times. Nations won't simply vanish, but there might be mass starvation and other nasty things. Smil comments about economic growth, GDP is a crappy way to calculate economic activity. He prefers calculating energy use, but it's incomplete method also.
