The current leadership of the ukraine have a similar mindset it seems. They believe they can win, which is ludicrous in my opinion. The French may have been inept and a bit too willing to surrender but at the end of the day their cities were not turned into rubble, their people not slaughtered en-mass. There is a certain wisdom in their actions. I only bring this up because it's another way cities can die. From a person living far from a large city it would also be a palatable solution to the hoards of refugees that will leave them when they become unsustainable.

Trying to predict what will happen when cities die (lack of resources) is like trying to predict antarctic ice-sheet collapses, hopeless. After the ancient cities fell there were no historians around recording where the people went and what they did when they got there, we are blind to these dark-ages. This thread has been discussing the signs and markers of the collapse of cities but one day we may have to live through such events. What then? Where do the strong young city dwellers go, the ones that escape. And what happens in the regions where they migrate? I imagine it will be something similar to what we are seeing in Western Europe but a lot more violent.
