Language is always evolving.

Shifting, mixing, & recombining in new ways over time.

Even people who speak the same language, may use that language in very specific regional ways, unfamiliar to folks from different regions.

So that expressions in a common language might be totally unfamiliar to some speakers of that language.

We have lots of colloquial euphemisms here in Texas, which are unique to the state, despite being American English.

For example... how many people here know what "tump" means?

For Texans, it's an instantly familiar word, used in common conversation.

What other regional word use where you live, would be Greek to the rest of us? (Excluding actual Greek of course.)

Any volunteers to "tump" me? :)

A tump, like everybody knows, is a large meat animal descended from genetically engineered whales that features in the novel Cat Karina.

You must be bonkers to ask that!

I can think of a few bawdy acronyms that might fit for "tump," but Aaron, I thought you were hetero!:-)

At my geekshop we have a bunch of slang.

"7104-165" means "the client's extension wasn't forwarding no-answer to voicemail and they forgot the feature-code to turn it back on."

"install pie in face" means "I made an obvious booboo."

"juggling porcupines" means "multi-tasking, where the tasks are particularly stressful."

"a Kaopectate moment" is what happens when something scares the crap out of you.

a "flash cut" is when you turn up a new PBX so quickly that the customer doesn't notice any downtime, for example during the lunch hour.

"coder fuel" is what you eat when you're in the middle of a marathon programming gig, and may include sugary snacks, chocolate, high-protein foods, and soft-drinks that contain B-vitamins and amino acids.

"catching mice" means "diagnosing a case of intermittent trouble."

"playtime" is any enjoyable R&D activity that isn't under a deadline.

I could go on if anyone's interested... (in fact I've been keeping a list of this stuff, might publish it on our website one of these days)

I think I win the prize :) Though it's not much of a stretch for me, since I live close enough to Texas that we share many of the same slang words. For those who don't know:

tump is a verb. Meaning, to turn over on one's side. I.e., Be careful not to tump over that bucket.

I guess I'm currently a 41 year old hetro guy with his nose pressed against the window looking in... :oops:

And despite having spent most of my life inside, I still get the, "How did all those people get in there?" feeling on occasion.

Which is usually followed by," Oh yeah... right... Now I remember."

Seems like no matter where I turn, it is the suspension of my own cherished beliefs that has the final say in my life.

I dunno which dictionary y'all are using but trump means ass kicking playing card. Common usage would include "my ace of spades trumps your jack".

There is no "R" in Tump.

Trump with an "R" is not slang but a regular word found in a dictonary.

Oh, I didn't say I used the word - only that I was aware of its meaning :).

Here's another southernism for you. When you go into a grocery store, you push something to hold your groceries while you're shopping. I have always used referred to the item as a shopping cart. But around here, lots of people call it a buggy. And their groceries are not put in bags, but in sacks. So you get a buggy and a sack, not a cart and a bag....

And people wonder why English is so hard to master :) lol
