US: Public Sex Offender Registry

Unread postby VinceG » Fri 05 Aug 2005, 04:45:15

I was shocked when I recently learned about implications of the Sex Offenders Registration Act. This act has been directed by the Michigan State Police to develop and maintain a Public Sex Offender Registry. The information on the PSOR is available on the Internet and includes an offender’s name, address, offense information, and a photograph!

First of all, these 'sex offenses' are extremely disputable. There was a case of an 18-year-old guy and a 15-year-old girl who, with mutual permission, had a sexual relationship. Unfortunately, according the Sex Offenders Registration Act, this 18-year-old is a 'sex offender'. He was sentenced to 21 months probation and will be on a list of 'sex offenders' that include pedophiles and rapists for the next 25(!) years. Worst of all, this registry is publicly available for everyone who wants to see it. Just go to http://www.mipsor.state.mi.us/mipsor/default.htm, enter your local ZIP-code and you get a list of 'sex offenders' in your neighbourhood.

I think this is just F#@%$&* crazy.

True, there may be cases when the "sex offender" isn't really an offender, but I suspect the majority are. I for one appreciate knowing about the location of sex offenders (for my children), and especially having a picture. I think a lot of these offenders establish a relationship with a family and then abuse the children. I'm all for privacy, etc. but when it comes to pedophilia's I don't have much sympathy since many of them abuse many many children.

Flaw in law

Unread postby dhfenton » Fri 05 Aug 2005, 10:12:51

I agree that some 18 year old kid who gets caught bonking his 15 girlfriend is not a dangerous sex offender. There are certainly a lot of offenders who need to be watched carefully. Most likely this kid is not one of them. In NY there are providions of the law that treat sex between consenting minors differently if they are within a few years in age. This law seems work well. Perhaps Michigan needs a little revision of their law. It was probably a knee jerk reaction to some incident where a sexual predator harmed a kid (think Patriot act after 9/11). Legistlators always seem to go overboard in response to sensational cases.

sorry

Sorry I accidentally posted this as a new topic. I was in response to the earlier thread of an 18 kid being placed on a sexual offenders website in Michigan for having sex with his 15 year old girlfriend.

Sounds to me like MI needs to change the laws on who can have sex with whom. Funny, it's all legal until his 18th birthday and then he's a predator. The list needs to stay, I want to know who is a threat. I think they should include all felonies.

There needs to be a "rolling window" of consent, say 4 years. That way, a 21-y.o. can have relations with a 17 y.o., but those 65 y.o. Viagra geriatrics can only have women ages 61-69. Not that I'm competing with their stock of ladies or anything... :o

Next wave of boutique suburbia:

New Subdivision Bans Sex Offenders from Buying Homes
Lubbock, Texas

That's right! A neighborhood in which the number one amenity is: freedom from sex offenders! That may sound ludicrous, but think of what else Lubbock has to offer discerning homebuyers... corn, corn, corn, wheat, corn, et. al...

Maybe we should require everyone to wear T-Shirts in public which describes their past?

That'd be alright, except that my t-shirt would have to look more like a night gown. Don't want to miss anything!

Now THAT is a good idea.

As for a sex offenders list, there nothing new. Why the sudden raising of the war flag?

Can't you see that it's all bullshit? Unless they put steel and iron gates, cameras and roving bands of militia/security guards around this thing, there's nothing stopping a '78 rusted-out A-Team van from pulling up and grabbing your kid out of a friend's front yard.

It's amazing what the lemmings will do for a 'sense' of security.
Lubbock has over 225,000 residents, and only about 500 registered sex offenders. That's less than one quarter of 1 percent (0.22%)!
I'd wager that there are more terrorists or polar bears in Lubbock than that.
