Since 1990, Walking and cycling down by around a quarter to a third, trips replaced mainly by cars Cars are far more important in rural areas pdf

25% of car trips are less than 2 miles, 75% are less than 10 miles

The richer you are:
- The less you walk
- The more you cycle
- The less you use buses
- The more you use trains
- The less you use taxis (although you will travel further in them)
- The more you travel in general
- The more you use public transit
pdf

In conclusion if oil become more expensive people would walk and cycle more, with no change in GDP concerning personal travel. The money saved would be spent in another part of the economy.

1990 I believe was a down year for much of the world, Japan crashed in 89, US was heading into a slump, probably were a lot of people out of work etc who were using the bus and walking ang biking more all right.

Southern California in 1991 was like the Bay Area now, 1/2 to 2/3 of tech office space vacant. This is probably why all the empty buildings here in silicon valley don't bother me much. I'm used to seeing that kind of thing.

The party's going to go on until that punch bowl is dry, dry, dry.
