[My] Kids say the darndest things

Postby pea-jay » Tue 26 Jul 2005, 02:54:35

Today was an interesting day. My wife had to come and pick up my daughter and I early from work (her daycare is onsite at my work) when the power abruptly went out at 230p and failed to come back on after an hour. Since the outside temps were pushing 104, the daycare was insistent on sending kids home before the facility overheated. On the way home I was telling my wife that the outage was fairly widespread (cause was unknown at this point but affected a half a dozen cities in two counties here in the valley) when she asked if it was related to the overall oil problem. I was starting to tell her that as oil depletes (in those words) my four and half year old in the backseat pipes up quite excitedly--

"Peakoil!!"

We both looked back and she giggled.

It was so cute, but so very sad at the same time. We never explained any these things to her so she obviously picked up on this from listening in to our conversations.

They're sponges those little ones.

Reminds me of Art Linkletter and his show which had the same title as your thread. This was way back 45 - 50 years ago. I still remember one of the funny things he reported: a little kid sang 'God Bless America' like this:

God Bless America
Land that I love
Stand beside her
And guide her
Throught the night
With the light
From a bulb.

I have not discussed PO with my children however the other day my 13 year old son and I were driving to soccer practice and he made the following comment

"Dad you are so lucky, petrol was real cheap when you grew up but it will be real dear by the time I get my licence"

Out of the mouths of babes aye

Those who are trying to hide peak oil from their children while telling their partners are wasting their time. Kids catch everything.

I most certainly have discussed this with my kids. Of course, mine aren't as young as pea-jays. My youngest was 11 when I discussed it with her and her brother and sister. She got scared until I told her that its 'just a theory, like Y2K was'. That reassured her at that time. Of course the idea sunk in and now my kids are all PO-aware. We still laugh and enjoy life in spite of it.

I think you are missing the point. It isnt wether I have discussed it with the kids or not but more the fact that I wonder how the kids of today will feel about us when they grow up and realise how we have stuffed up their world.

Not just PO but polution, strip mining, deforestation etc....

I know I would be pretty bitter.

children shouldnt be told about peak oil at all in my opinion. peak will come, yep, but it will likely be a non-event. its not a good idea to talk about doom laden scenarios as if they are fact. they are not.

Maybe your daughter is optimistic after all. She peaked at peak oil by herself, and maybe she knows that we can make it.
