The Chinese have created something very much like the socialist dystopia George Orwell wrote about in 1984.

In 1984 the all powerful state watched all its citizens carefully and kept files on them and repressed and punished anyone who didn't behave exactly as the state wanted.

Its the same things with the Chinese social credit system....in China the all powerful state watches all its citizens carefully and keeps files on everyone and gives everyone a "social credit" number and repressed those people who don't behave exactly as the state wants.

Orwell brilliantly described how being monitored all the time affected individuals in 1984: It was terribly dangerous to let your thoughts wander when you were in any public place or within range of a telescreen. The smallest thing could give you away. A nervous tic, an unconscious look of anxiety, a habit of muttering to yourself-anything that carried with it the suggestion of abnormality, of having something to hide. In any case, to wear an improper expression on your face ... was itself a punishable offense.

The Chinese system is the perfect fascist system resulting in total state control of every individual. Its a real life version of Orwell's 1984.

B - those who desire personal responsibility and autonomy

The Social Credit System is merely a means of measuring people in the same way that Americans use income to measure people. It is for those who think that they are better than what their wealth says about them. But it will have consequences. The most striking of them is how it will eliminate outliers. Everyone who really is special will get hauled before the judges, to determine what sort of deviant nature has led them so far away from the group. It will stifle innovation. It will work toward a monolithic culture. It will prevent good people from finding forgiveness. But that's not actually very far from what using income does.

The reason it isn't very far doesn't have to do with money. It has to do with human nature. Most people are extroverts. They need each other to pattern off of, so that they can feel good about themselves as being normal. In America we use this sort of thinking to help us feel normal when we don't win, and some Brahman does instead. We complain in unison with all of the others. We remain in unity, until it is our turn to win or lose again. Lather, rinse, repeat. America's way does not ask its citizens to change. The Brahmans don't want the competition. It expects them to complain.

This new Chinese idea will only take that impulse, of seeking normality, and put it on steroids. Perhaps it comes out of understanding something and getting along with it, but it sure seems like it is about power. And about not allowing their people to become selfish in the same way that Americans are selfish, over income. That's a shame because the scientific method and the process of reward for winners in the market place have been good ways to determine what really does work, when we want to change things. This new system may ask people to accept those economic failures because there are so many other data points they need to pay attention to. It could change China in ways even the communists never thought it would.
