Announce my presence with authority....

Unread postby Reality_Conference » Wed 27 Jul 2005, 01:43:22

Greetings all,

I have peen perusing this site for a few weeks now and this is my first post. The subject is straight from the movie Bull Durham and is supposed to be funny, so don't get offended.

I am new to the Peak Oil reality and just got through reading my first book on the subject. Needless to say I am quite overwhelmed. I am so thankful that you people are here though.

I don't know about you but to me this subject just reeks of truth. I believe that most of what I've heard is real. I believe that we are running out of oil and this has dramatic ramifications for our society and for our civilization. I am an optimist by trade, but in light of the information I have been gathering over the last few weeks, I decided to put the capper on this one and celebrate with a bottle of tequila.

I'll only bore you for a little while longer and that is only for the sake of imparting to you fine people the way I see things. What do I know, eh, I'm just one of the humans, but I know something of human nature. And like or not folks, my heart tells me we are in for a rough ride. (fucked) In some sick way this is exactly what I have been waiting for. I have never held in high regard the American way of life nor have I built my life chasing after material wealth, so in some ways the reality of Peak Oil is welcome to me. However, I must admit to a certain fear as to the reaction of my fellow human beings. We aren't going to like this one. My faith in my "government" to tell me the truth and to take care of things is ZERO. What the hell to do?

In any case, I look forward to talking with you all about this more. "Buckle your seatbelt, Dorothy, 'cause Kansas is going bye-bye."

Sigh.

Welcome, Reality_Conference! :)

Now, go to the Psychology board and lurk over those threads. Post your worries and fears and thoughts like you just did above. We're all right there with you on this; you are NOT alone!

OK, put down the tequila and go out there and make someone's day a little better (even if it's just giving them a "hello" and a smile). THAT will make YOUR day a little better, and there'll be no hangover afterwards! :-D

It's all gonna happen; but TODAY is still a gift (believe it or not). And who knows? You may meet someone who will be in your future post-peak community. Or acquire something that will be useful in your future post-peak community. Stranger things have happened. . . .

Hello Reality_Conference and welcome. So, you're in Tuscaloosa. You finish that bottle of Tequila and you're going to be in Tusca-'wittle bit'-loosa.

RC, we PeakOilers would simply say it 'reeks of rectitude', especially on 'cabbage night.' Uhmm, welcome. :)

"Cabbage Night"

Never heard it called as such, but I do understand the meaning. I am not in the most wholesome state of rectitude right now, but you know what-- I've just assimilated the fact that my current way of life is going to expire most certainly within my lifetime, as well as the possibility of the extinction of a lot of people I might care about. So i figured it wouldn't be deemed entirely "un-prudent" to mark the occasion with alcohol. What can I say?

In the end though I aim to live. i am a survivor, no doubt in my mind. I want to see what will happen. I don't neccesarily want to become part of a roving gang of thugs, but I reckon I'll end up doing what I have to do. I see hope in the people here. i see awareness and willingness. I'm struggling now with the best way to approch my current situation, but I feel I'll be ok.

In regards to current affairs--I hope and pray that this will be a gradual transition. For myself, sure, but also because I am quite unsure how the humans will handle a sudden onset of dire consequences. I read somewhere on here that the Southeast US would in a post-peak world become a haven for African-Americans. I don't doubt this scenario. But I have to tell you--They would have about 100 years of payback coming. In an environment without police support and "laws", a lot of us would be food for the "retribution", especially considering the atrocities us white people have incurred upon the other races.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', '"')Cabbage Night" seems to be restricted largely to the Northeastern U.S. Ray Bradbury used the term in his classic story "Something Wicked This Way Comes" in 1962, and "Cabbage Night" probably dates back to at least the early 20th century. There seem to be three explanations for the name: the use of cabbage stumps to mark windows by pranksters, the tossing of cabbage stumps at neighbors' doors to create a loud and surprising "thump," and the tactic of dumping rotting produce on the victim's porch to create a smelly mess.
Interesting word, zentric. I'd never heard it before. Seems to be associated with Halloween. This forum is quite educational with all the different kinds of people. Could be why I've become so addicted. A site where like-minded people all say pretty much the same thing is less interesting.

Welcome Aboard Reality_Conference!

Yes, even the best case scenario will be worse than anything that has happened in North America in living memory. At least those of us who have some understanding of the situation won't be taken completely unawares.

Knowing this might be the final year of (semi) normalcy in (some parts of) the world, I celebrate every sweet day.

I doubt it. Don't let paranoia take you over. Everyone will be too busy surviving to worry about settling historical scores.

That's right, the truth stinks.

You can never be sure of that. It's in bad times when people remember that they have hated the guts of their neighbours all along.

 You're right, of course.

Witness Easter Island. It split into two camps: one that wanted to move some stone into the ocean to make way for agriculture, the other opposed to such a program (liberal vs conservative?).

One side defeated the other.

Then ate them.

Yep that's what they did all right.

The most cuttroat, dog-eat-dog places on the planet have proven to be Pacific ocean islands, and if you guys ever wonder why I'm such a hard case, I grew up on a pacific island. You learn to lose your delusions.
