$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('MicroHydro', ' ')practice the litany against rage:

I must not rage
Rage is the mind-killer.
Rage is the little-death that brings total obliteration.
I will face my rage.
I will permit it to pass
Over me and through me.
And when it has gone past
I will turn the inner eye
To see its path.
Where the rage has gone
There will be nothing.
Only I will remain....

Rage consumes people. I have tamed/suppressed it for many years now. But in youth it can be a force to be reckoned with, and can tear a world apart. Pity the poor soul who hates his or her rage and is powerless to resist it. And pity their victims too. When I was a boy, the music was mostly about sweet sentiments. Something happened in the 60s and 70s and now the music is mostly to sooth or sublimate rage, it seems to me.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('MicroHydro', 'D')o not flame me or PM me about this. I just push the ignore button on flamers. Instead practice the litany against rage:

Paul Atredies is Osama Bin Laden

As outrageous as it might seem at first glance, in your heart, you know it is true.

Recall that the terrorist Paul Atredies led religious fundamentalists on a jihad against the rich soft fat infidel offworlders that were taking spice (oil) from Fremen (Arab) land. Osama is a hero and inspirational figure to hundreds of millions of people, he is larger than life, and has defied the best efforts of the empire to crush him.

Cool MicroHydro ...
The Litany against rage :)
Hm ... but in the book Paul was not on the payroll of the Paddisah :roll:
And the Arabs are not particularly keen in establishing a new Empire (or are they??)
Unless .... check this to see if it makes sense
In Dune the Paddisah appoints Leto Atreides as governor of Dune (effectively putting him on the payroll), but subsequently betrays him; the son (Paul) avenges latter after more than a decade.
How about ....
Leto = Osama
Paul = Al Queda?
Even the temporal sequence of events makes sense now.
I'm still waiting for someone to say the unthinkable ...
WHO IS SADDAM IV??

My father once told me that respect for the truth comes close to being the basis for all morality. "something cannot emerge from nothing" he said This is profound thinking if you understand how unstable "the truth " can be

PS: Herbert was peak oil aware as educated people have been since the 1920s. His 1950s novel "Dragon in the Sea" was about peak oil. It takes place during the desperate oil endgame. The US was so starved for oil that it stole oil from the Soviet arctic shelf. US submarines drilled offshore well and transported the stolen oil back to the US towed underwater in giant plastic baggies. Naturally, the Soviets objected to this resource theft and responded by putting moles in the US submarine fleet.
From another Herbert scholar:$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'A')s a novelist Herbert started with THE DRAGON IN THE SEA (1955). Originally it appeared in serialized form in Astounding under the title Under Pressure. The futuristic submarine thriller predicted worldwide conflicts over oil consumption and production.

Yes I forgot about "The Dragon in the Sea"
Herbert served in the US Navy during WWII; he was aware of the war over oil and how it determined the outcome in the Pacific and Europe.
And he was deeply aware of the scarcity thing. Dune is about scarcity, human character, ecology, religion, power and the dream of a society emanating from an individual.
I hope that as in the books atomics stay locked in their vaults... then a positive outcome is feasible.
If they dont, could at least marine micro-organisms do it right this time and stop dying on anticlines? This will save this planet another nuclear party 3 billions years from now
:P

Yes, Osama might be Duke Leto, there is a good argument that Osama died December 2001. His obit ran in Egypt at that time before his followers decided a living Osama was more useful. Also the actor in the October 2004 video was obviously not him, and the even worse actor in the amateurish 'confession' video 'found' in Afghanistan in 2001 didn't look remotely like him.

Osama has at least one living son who is at large and loyal to the cause, so that would be Paul.

I thought they were powered by mini nukes in the book.
I always thought that the Holtzman field referred to some weird application of the Kasimir effect ... who knows.
We do not have any lasguns though !!!!!

If this is true (any links?) then Osama in video = Emmanuel Goldsmith in 1984 (that was the name of the scapegoat in Oceania, feel free to correct me if I'm wrong)

i dont think so it was more like harnessing gravity or magnatism to create the Duniverse energy...Family atomics were only to be used in case of an outside threat to humanity...most in the Duniverse lived an agriarian life for which ever House had control of the planet or planets for different resources...thinking machines and techno what nots of trinkets were not in the duniverse...only IX produced the highliners for stella travel financed by the Guild

just my perception however :-D

Herbert was very scetchy about the energy infrastucture ...
There was diversification of planetary economy based on relative competitive advantage.
Caladan = Fish+Wine
Arrakis = Spice
IX = Technology
Wallach IX = cladenstine eugenicomaniac whores :-D
Geidi Prime = Strip mined industrial center (I wonder what it reminds me of hmmmm)
Thinking machines ie. robots and computers were banned .
We managed to fit all that in a single blue sphere

He was portrayed as an asshole in the prequels. Velma (what was her last name darn it) was the prodigee who started space folding engines and became the first Guild Navigator after consuming too much spice.
Kind like tha auto industry .... the consumed too much of the stuff and not it does not flow :lol: :lol:

yep Tio was a arsehole but he did do the original calculation she just made it better more useful. Holtzman couldnt or lacked the ability to see beyond he was a product of his enviroment and times a planet based on slaves with a ruling elite
