Tanada,

Problem is there are no “other foods”. As for most islands there is next to zero local food production. Almost 100% imports. I’m in St Martin, I had to go to the airport to receive some boat parts. While waiting on the loading dock they were off loading pallets of “fresh fish” which had just been flown in.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Newfie', 'A')ctually the biggest problem would be being attacked by impoverished humans.

Yeah, I think most people who reject even thinking about such things have one of two* reactions: either they would have no idea how to go about finding water without the H & C symbols and know it, or they realize that at some point (or many points) it would come down to fight or flight.
So if they think about it at all, they just say: 'I hope the bomb falls on me' and go to the next tweet.

The MacGyver Challenge aspect I'm OK with, I've always been kind of a make-do guy, read that "jack of all trades...master of none."
I'm pretty sure I don't want to be the first to go and the fight or flight bit I'm not all that keen on, but what is the option? At what point do you just roll over or go into the closet for a solo necktie party?

* 3rd option: I'll just take Pops' stuff, lol
The legitimate object of government, is to do for a community of people, whatever they need to have done, but can not do, at all, or can not, so well do, for themselves -- in their separate, and individual capacities.

Pops,

I’ve pretty clearly heard that expressed. “Well, in that case, I guess I’ll just die.”

Frankly I think a good bit of the population falls into this category, my gut says 40% - 60%.

Can’t recall the source but I’ve read something like 80% of pilots downed at sea during WWII died prematurely, while they still had 2-3 days provisions. Thinking is they became dispondent and gave up hope. The other 20% you can’t kill with a stick. No clue what group I’m in. Probably depends upon the situation. It seems thinking of Wife and kids and family helps a lot get through. There is a big mental component here.

If your long-term goal is to own a "net-zero" and all-electric residence, or even an "energy plus" home that powers itself AND charges an EV, that seems to me to be the correct goal. If you live in a rural area or even have a generous suburban lot, that is achievable using Solar PV and/or wind turbines.

My plan is to convert my Nantucket residence to "Energy Plus", or to build such on another part of my property, which is subdividable into three/four lots. I favor (for cost reasons) using the grid as a lossless battery, however I am unsure of the legislative environment, specificly if distributed energy producers are allowed "Net Metering". I am sure that I do not want to pay for battery storage until the price of such becomes more reasonable.

It only makes sense. Don't pollute, even with wood smoke, let alone FF's. Use clean electricity for everything, and minimize overall energy consumption. Once "Energy Plus" is achieved with storage, you really do not care about the grid outage, no matter how prolonged.
