Lorenzo, I warn you! No more US-bashing!

Yes so what, they have their own version of CNN. Are they not allowed to have their own version or what? I see you think it must be like in the Soviet Union, one brand for everything from shoes to telly-programs. It's called free enterprise, man! Choice! Freedom!

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Free', '
')I think you are right in many ways that Europes politics is corrupted just as much, only in another way, it would be done behind the curtains.

But that's probably the thing why the Chevron-deal is so outrageous to us, because it's done so openly! You lay money on the table and get what you want! That's acceptable in a supermarket for us, but not in a government which is elected by the people! That's how we see it, what's your point of view?

Exactly. Let's open another thread about corruption in Europe, fine with me.

Here, I really just wanted to know how Americans view their system and why they apparently think it's normal. As I said, it's an institutionalized practise: you are allowed to give lawmakers and political representatives money, to have them support your case. In Europe, this would be considered to be totally illegal.

Maybe there are advantages to the American system, maybe not. I just fell off my chair yesterday, when I heard this on CNN. There were several interviews about this topic, where analysts made this same comparison.

So again: what do you, as an American think of this system?

Yes so what, they have their own version of CNN. Are they not allowed to have their own version or what?

I didn't say they are not allowed to have their own version. All I said is that CNN has decided to make two different versions of itself: one for Americans, and one for an international audience. Just an observation.
That's all. It's not America bashing! It's a simple observation!!! :)

Again....Pot meet kettle.
You know how often the UN tries to dictate US policy? You know how often the UN pulls these exact same scams?

No please tell me, how often? What did the UN force upon the US? The Kyoto protocol? The international ban of antipersonnel mines? The international ban of child-soldiers? The attack on Iraq?

As for the rest of your post I am a bit confused since I don't know what to take seriously.... I think I need another beer...

Then stop going around shouting that you want free trade and free market capitalism.

You should go out and shout: "We only want free trade and free market capitalism when it's guaranteed that we win and you lose."

Else, people would keep thinking you use double standards and hypocrisy.

Forgot to add, dont worry Europe is first. Remember, Australia was populated from your criminals, theives and rapists. So really, Europe trumps Australia everytime.
Except in good dive sites.

I think we agreed that every country or region of this doomed planet is just as shitty as any other, let's not forget that! Except you think good dive sites weigh up the disadvantage of being the offspring of criminals.

2 pages of debate & not a single piece of evidence?

Shame on you all...
The problem is, of course, that not only is economics bankrupt, but it has always been nothing more than politics in disguise... economics is a form of brain damage.

Haha, touche.
By the strict and true definition of "Free trade" your aboslutely right. But, a country absolutely MUSt weigh the advantages and disadvantages in every "Free trade" move it allows. America is certainly no exception to this rule.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Aaron', 'o')k... 3 pages....

Aaron, it was on CNNi last night, even though there's no trace of the story left on the website.

This story (coming from the Financial Times) will do as well:

US lawmakers meddle in CNOOC's Unocal bid

by (Agencies/FT)

Washington lawmakers who have expressed opposition to CNOOC's US$18.5 billion bid for Unocal Corp have received more than US$100,000 in campaign contributions from rival bidder Chevron since 2002, the Financial Times reported, citing publicly available filings in the US.

That has raised questions over whether Chevron is drumming up a campaign of opposition to the deal, it said in its online edition.

It cited an unidentified person close to CNOOC as saying that Chevron is using its political clout in Washington to try to increase uncertainty over the higher CNOOC bid for Unocal.

"Chevron does not want to do the math, that 67 dollars per share is higher than 60 dollars per share. It is cheaper for Chevron to raise political uncertainty than it is for them to raise their bid," the person was quoted as saying.

But a person close to Chevron denied that the company has summoned Washington lawmakers to come out in opposition to the deal, the paper said.

"These are members of Congress ... they take their own actions. Given the certainty of our offer and the timing of its approval, we believe it is superior at the existing price," the person said.

Richard Pombo, the Republican congressman from California who sent a letter to President George Bush raising concerns about the deal days before a bid by CNOOC was announced, has received US$13,500 from Chevron over the last three years, the report said, citing data compiled by the Center for Responsive Politics.

Pombo's letter was followed by a similar letter signed by 41 House Republicans and Democrats, of which 22 had received political contributions from Chevron in the past three election cycles, the report said.

China angrily responded to a vote by US lawmakers last week that urged the US administration to block CNOOC's 18.5-billion-dollar takeover bid for Unocal.

"We demand that the US Congress correct its mistaken ways of politicizing economic and trade issues and stop interfering in the normal commercial exchanges between enterprises of the two countries," China's foreign ministry said in a statement.

On Thursday, the House of Representatives voted 398-15 for the non-binding resolution, which said the takeover "would threaten to impair the national security of the United States".

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Editorial Notes ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The UK's Financial Times publishing (what qualifies these days as) investigative journalism into US politics is curious, that its to the benefit of the Chinese national oil company is even curiouser. Is Chevron about to discover that its not that big a fish after all? -LJ
-----------
Note the editorial comment: all those who investigate US politics, are dubbed "curious".
