$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Madpaddy', 'D')omus,

It's Network if I remember correctly.

Absolutely correct. Give the Mad Mick a cupie doll.

It was the character played by that great British actor Peter Finch. I believe he died shortly after making the movie.

Smiley,

I used only watch F1 in the morbid hope of witnessing a 300mph collision and top of my wish list were such a collision to occur would be that Fast Eddie was involved.

1) Fundamentalist "Christian" Anything i.e. 700 club, Pat Robertson, Jerry Falwell, crappy synthesized derivative contemporary christian "music," icky "christian" bookstores....though I rather like the double-image Jesus postcards, like the ones you used to get in a Cracker Jack Box....they're kinda kitchy.

2) Organized Religion Period

3) Telemarketing... or any other kind of marketing

4) Designer-dictated fashion (in fact...anything being considered "in" or "out")

5) The sound of politicians' voices (especially you-know-who..."nukular")

6) Individual ketchup/mustard/condiment packages

7) Pro-sports

8 Processed Cheese-Food (you know...they stuff they pump onto nachos at the stadium...what the hell is that shit anyway?)

9) Hummel figurines

10) People defining themselves by the job they do or the possessions they own, rather than who they are.

I won't miss the worst incarnations of motorized transit, namely:

1. CARS WITH BASS SYSTEMS - man I hate those things!!
2. ATVs
3. Dirt bikes
4. Jet skis

What I WON'T miss ('cause my aim's gittin better):

1. Politicians (especially those who promise "Recovery is just around the corner / over the horizon");

2. Economists, of ALL varieties;

3. Equal 3rd with below: Political Correctness and the Dumbing Down of all Schools / Universities / colleges;

3. Equal 3rd: Economic Rationalism nee Freemarket Fundamentalism a.k.a Globalisation;

4. Lawyers and the demonstrably insane judges they become who release the obviously guilty because of a minor technicality;

5. Psychiatrists and the way they always have some excuse for the blatantly criminal; also the way that psychiatry manages to belittle anyone who tries to have ethics and apply them by calling them "Traditionalists";

6. Two-stroke motorcycles that sound like they have no mufflers;

7. Motorways / freeways knocking down vast areas for pointless constructions and the diversion of hundreds of billions of dollars into the pointless maintenance of roads like that.

8. Modern Art & Modern Artists (the old style of Michelangelo (etc) was really good - now why can't they do that sort of art any more? I suspect it's because the modern ones are talentless)

9. Yuppies;

10. Clueless "positive types" who insist that we can make a difference by repeating to ourselves "In Every Way In Every Day, I Am Getting Better And Better"; and "Ignore the Downside - Concentrate On The Positives"; thus making us all even LESS likely to recognise Peak Oil;

11. Phone telemarketers from India, who insist that they are locals;

12. Sprawling Shopping Malls.

13. Credit cards and the rotten unethical companies that promote them;

14. Traffic Jams;

15. Inane reports on the TV/ radio ABOUT Traffic Jams;

16. TV and radio in general, as it has no content that anyone either needs or could relate to;

17. Advertisements and the elitist yuppie executives who produce them.

18. McSuburbs and McMansions & the McIdiots who took out huge loans to pay for them & who will leave the REST of us thereby ENTERNALLY IN THEIR DEBT.

19. Banks. All of them, except the Grammayre Bank.

20. Corporations, especially the multi-national ones.

It's toxic waste...didn't you know that? "Excrement" is something that, when placed on the garden, makes EXCELLENT fertilizer. If you stuck that stuff on your garden (assuming you have one) you'd pollute the ground water. Since they can't dispose of it safely any other way, they feed it to sheeple. Same as McDonald's.

Economists and the Corporcretins they serve, especially in the motor industry.

They got us into this mess.

I hope there's a circle in hell especially for them.

A lot more stuff that people won't miss than will. Interesting that music was about the only thing people could think of to mention that they would miss. But the crappy stuff, ah, the list goes on and on! (and yeah, those little portion sized ketchup things are about as annoying as it gets. :x ) The evidence would seem to be that folks around here, and probably in general think this world we have been born into sucks. All stress, absurdity, idiocy, ugliness, and just plain crap. We grab what joys and pleasures we can and then spend most of our time enduring hassles of one kind or another. (I'm suprised no one mentioned beer in the 'things I will miss' thread.)

What I won't miss: POP CULTURE! I dispise every aspect of it. I would not care one bit if it were to dissapear from the earth completly. It is the biggest waste of time, effort, and money to ever occu[py the modern mind. It simply shoudld not exist.

For lack of a better term, "interrupting technology". I am no luddite, but there seems to be an increasing amount of technology which has the feature of interrupting life. Cell phones are an obvious example, made worse than regular phones by the fact that people carry them everywhere, and the annoying 'custom' rings. Instant Messaging is another. Sirens, flashing lights, buzzers, and alarms are everywhere (school buses in my city have strobe lights on at all times, and public buses have flashing brake lights). Grocery and other stores have a PA system that regularly (and mindlessly) announces ads, specials, and warnings to keep your child restrained. Even appliances have chimes, buzzers, or beeping to call you to action, in spite of the idea that they are presumably there to do work so you won't have to.

All this technology fighting for our attention is making people numb to stimulus, and unable to focus on whatever they're actually doing at the time.

Agressively 'friendly' Vons supermarket employees. I know they all get the same pressure and corporate spiel, that its company policy, but most of them have the tact not to be too obtrusive with it. But sometimes you get an imbecile bag checker who is constantly chatting you up, wanting to know how you're doing today, wanting to know if you'd like any help out to the car, or making comments about whatever it is you've bought. You just feel like telling them to shut the hell up. At least I do.

The need for this mental dialogue:

"I'm awfully sorry I'm not going fast enough for you. After all, I'm only speeding on the most heavily policed road in the county. I really should risk getting a ticket I can't afford so you can get to your Pilates class 30 seconds earlier. I mean, you're obviously the supreme ruler of the entire road."
