I blame God.
He should have made oil a renewable resource.

Vegetable oil in salad dressings is renewable!

Ultimately, human nature + capitalism + democracy:

1. Human nature: explanation not necessary

2. Capitalism: Not a bad concept in itself but in practice is mostly unregulated. This ties in strongly with democracy in that it allows absolutely nothing in the way of planning. Countless examples can be found. Plastic is more expensive to sort and recycle than it is to produce new, so it becomes disposable. The faster we deplete our resources (all resources, not just oil), the more we screw ourselves over tomorrow, but who cares about that because we get richer today.

3. Democracy: Another good idea, but there is absolutely no way to have any sort of long term planning. Some party gets elected, comes in and rules for a few years, then someone else comes in and takes over. It's a big game about pleasing the people now in order to be re-elected.

A closing thought: because of #1, we will never be able to have any type of significant long-term planning while #2 and 3 are still in existance. I would bet that East Berlin was more sustainable than the West, but it never would have worked because the population kept escaping to the West in order to fulfil their selfish immediate desires (#1)
