But I still love the sub-head in the article, "A natural gas boom is transforming public lands in the Rockies pitting Westerner against Westerner." I am wondering if the other "Westerner" is a cattle rancher or a real estate speculator?

Ranchers and property owners because of saline runoff and other problems. Coal miners because the process of injecting carbonated water into the wells as they die makes the coal less viable.
