I am planning my escape from the Gulag after being sent here during the first purges of the Obama Administration. (Seems some nice folks on a blog turned me in for being a neocon troll and not agreeing with the party line.)

Obama is near the end of his first 5 year plan and has suspended the constitution due the "long emergency". There are now only the poor. The wealthy and the middle class have had their property and money pilfered by the government. His citizen action groups spy on everyone and turn in anyone not loyal to the government. Obama's mentor, Rev. Wright is leading the effort to deify him personally. Such a cult of Personality has not been seen since Stalin.

But there is a resistence!! We go over the wire tonight! We shall prevail!
Viddy well, little brother. Viddy well.

AgentR gets up in the morning of Apr 1, 2013, stretches and staggers to the coffee pot, sets it off on its business of making liquid life then hunts down his child to get them up and dressed for school.

By the time the protests have stopped, the coffee pot makes its last rattle, which causes the decrepit old man to stagger back to it and pour a first cup... a sip... bliss.

Sitting down at his terminal, AgentR logs in, checks the weather then browses over to PO.com; where people are perplexed again by the precipitous drop in the price of oil. Posts about the scandals committed by Politician X abound, and speculation concerning electric cars and PV grids are mixed with paranoia about the latest government coverup.

A brief glance to the left hand pane reveals oil has indead taken a steep drop in price over the last couple weeks.. $432 / barrel. What a bargain! Surburbia is saved!

SUV warmin up on the driveway, wouldn't want to have child subjected to a 50F car interior...
Yes, we are. As we are.
And so shall we remain; Until the end.

In Alaska, Gov. Sarah Palin once again announced an increase in the payment from the state's Sovereign Wealth Fund to its citizens. "The payment for 2014 is expected to top $50,000 per person"....said Gov. Palin. In more news, President Obama and Gov. Palin signed an agreement allowing drilling in ANWR, on the condition that a small percentage of the oil revenues be sent to needy states in the lower 48 to help care for all the domestic pets that are now being used as "sled dogs" as teams of poodles and pitbulls are hitched up to pull old SUVs and other cars along otherwise empty freeways as part of President Obama's plan to cut gas use use and reduce CO2 emissions and secure his legacy as the man who "stopped the seas from rising." :)

Anyone care to comment on the accuracy or not of predictions made five years ago about today?

It's clear that most posters confused "peak oil" = the point when oil production maxes out and "oil running out" = as depicted in the predictions.

But the only reason things are still relatively OK is because of energy substitution and conservation plus the fact that people are adjusting to fuel prices that are much higher than their historical averages, either by using less or by spending less elsewhere.

Two factors in the "flatlining" of western economic activity, those countries that ate still seeing real growth are doing it on the back of coal, not oil.

Agent I stumbled over this and it cracked me up! What a change since 2008!

Sure! All the last kick the can exercises sort of went stale when peak oil happened and all the US got was cheaper fuel and the cheapest natural gas in 2 decades, I think what is fascinating about asking this question again is the new ways some will come up with to continue their doom hopes. At least by now, maybe we'll get some realistic ones?
