Soininvaara's vision for a peak oil solution

Unread postby Tuike » Mon 11 Jul 2005, 06:38:25

Ex chairman of the finnish green party Osmo Soininvaara was interviewed in todays Helsingin Sanomat. In his vision Kyoto treaty is expanded in 2009, where all countries in the world take part. Most even voluntairly. In 2012 the treaty is still expanded to fossil fuels. Every country will be given a quota how much they can consume oil and other fossil fuels. A solid price will be set for oil so that economy wouldn't crash because of too high price of oil. Quota on oil consumption would decrease greenhouse gases.

Soininvaara admits, that his vision is rather utopistic and it doesn't have any realism at all. He adds that there are signs that USA is looking for a military solution for peak oil. In fact the war in Iraq was because of oil.

In the end Soininvaara says that he is rather optimistic even though we are running out of oil. There are a lot of useless oil consumption that we can live without.

Utopic is an understatement.

He assumes that in face of shortage people can behave rationally. I won't bet my bicycle on that :)

A quick search on "mob psychology" should suffice 8O
Stop filling dumpsters, as much as you possibly can, and everything will get better.

Just think it through.
It's not hard to do.

I for one hope he can get his fellow country men to follow suit.

The more pacified they are the easier they will be conquered and there oil stolen. :P

It is far more likely that the end of the oil age will be like feeding 5 dogs out of one bowl.

Must agree that the naivete (spelling?) of my fellow countryman Soininvaara is beyond any scale.

To his defence the phrase "in a perfect world" kind sets the tone.

In a perfect world there would be plentifull of non-polluting energy, I would be rich as a pig and I would get Hugh Hefner's job.

I feel sad about the cynicism.

We've just lived through the most selfish and individualistic period in human history, fueled by a triumphalist capitalism and cheap-cheap energy. It's a mistake to generalize about human nature and what is possible on the basis of the last 25 years (since Reagan and Thatcher).

It doesn't take courage to be cynical.

Going against the tide, believing in something -- that takes courage.

Knowing the truth is better than believing in 'something'. Nothing in the past 250 or 2500 or 25000 years shows human nature to be particularly nice towards other competitors when faced with a scarce resource.

There is no oil in Finland and never has been; the country has never produced even a drop. The geology isn't right - this is one of the oldest parts of the world.

This is pretty fortunate, actually, considering that we have a rather big and nasty neighbour whose "patriots" would like to invade even without the oil reason. It's just that they have plenty of small oil-rich ex-underlings to bully, so they'll go fight someone else instead. If they do, remembering that they, too, have a big scary oil-thirsty new Great Power as a neighbour and they might just have something to say about that...

Besides them, who's going to invade us? The Scandinavians? Yeah, right. (NO, WE ARE NOT SCANDINAVIANS!!!) Besides the Russians, the only people around the Baltic sea that could conquer Finland today are the Germans and they've been turned into pacifists (and Finland wouldn't exactly be their first target anyway...).

Our water supplies could be a reason to invade Finland. We have plenty of fresh water supplies, while the world struggles in drough. There was in news that a Saudi-Arabians bought a finnish company, that makes bottled water...

Yeah, I'm sure Saudi Arabia is going to conquer us.

Russia doesn't have much of a water problem, either, especially in the areas near Finland (they're pretty much identical in this). You can't transport water well over long distances, so we just aren't going to see the desert countries invading us. That's just silly.

And in case it's the same company I'm thinking of, it was unprofitable and they couldn't even get the Saudis to buy it. It's just not profitable to transport massive amounts of water from here to Saudi Arabia, which is why they were making *bottled water*, ie. really expensive water where you're hoping that people will pay extra for the brand.
